History
In 1792, Governor Robert Patton declared illegal the importation of black slaves from Africa , made previously by the British East India Company . After that, it was decided for work in the agricultural industry of the island to begin hiring contracted workers from China. For this, the British colonial government sent a request to China. The vast majority of Chinese workers arrived on the island between 1810 and 1834 . The largest number - 618 Chinese arrived in 1818 [2] . Subsequently, many of these workers were allowed to stay on St. Helena. Their descendants were included in the population of St. Helena. The first appearance of Chinatown outside Singapore occurred in 1852 , when in his book, Rev. Hatfield used the term to define the Chinese settlement on the island [3] .
Current situation
According to the 2016 census , 1932 people of Chinese descent lived on the island, which is 25% of the total population of the island [1] . The Chinese on St. Helena most often profess Christianity and Buddhism [4] .
