History
The fort was built by the British in 1799 to protect the island from the French . Initially, the fort was a round fortification in the form of a tower adapted to all- round defense , so sometimes the fort is called the Martello Tower. In 1874, the fort was rebuilt by royal engineers, the High Knoll tower was added [1] . During the Second Boer War, the fort served as a prison for captured Boers . In addition, prisoner of war camps were built in Broadbottom, Deadwood, Deadwood and Jamestown [2] . In the 20th century, the fort served as a quarantine place for imported chickens, sheep, and cattle. In the mid-1980s, NASA equipped the fort with a small space observation station.
