Biography

Viltrud Drexel was born on August 16, 1950 in the city of Feldkirch in the federal state of Vorarlberg , Austria .

In 1968 she entered the main squad of the Austrian national team and made her debut in the World Cup. A year later, the first victories won in downhill at the stages in Grindelwald and Schruns came to her - at the end of this season, Drexel won the downhill classification, having received her first and only Crystal Globe, while in the overall classification of all disciplines she took third place.

Thanks to a series of successful performances, she was awarded the right to defend the honor of the country at the Sapporo Winter Olympics in 1972 - she could not finish in the slalom, failing the first attempt, but she showed the third result in the giant slalom and thereby won the bronze Olympic medal, only Swiss Marie-Terez ahead Nadig and compatriot Annemarie Moser-Prel . For all that, she was not able to speak here in her main discipline, downhill.

After the Olympics, Viltrud Drexel remained in the Austrian main ski team and continued to take part in major international competitions. So, in 1974, she visited the World Championships in St. Moritz , where she brought the bronze dignity award - on the downhill she was passed by Annemarie Moser-Prel and Betsy Clifford .

Subsequently, she remained an active professional athlete until 1976. She tried to qualify for the home Olympic Games in Innsbruck , but could not do this and soon decided to leave the big sport. Over the course of her sports career, she climbed the podium of the World Cup a total of 27 times, including the best in five stages. In addition, it has on its track record four gold medals of the Austrian national championships won in downhill (1970, 1974, 1976) and slalom (1974).
