Born in the family of a merchant; From childhood, he was interested in painting and, despite the protests of the family, decided to make it his profession. In his youth, he was a student of famous Danish artists Martinus Rörby , Kristen Köbke and Kristoffer Eckersberg , as well as sculptor Hermann Wilhelm Bissen . In 1840 he left Denmark: first he lived in Munich and Dresden , where he studied with Ludwig Richter , Joseph von Fürich and Eduard Bendeman ; then from 1846 to 1851 in Italy ; and after 22 years in Paris with a break in 1856-1858, when he returned to Denmark. Finally returned to his homeland in 1873. In 1855, he married a Frenchwoman, after whose death in 1873, and decided to finally return to Denmark; at home in 1878 he married a second time.
Froelich originally painted mainly animalistic paintings, but abroad he turned to historical and mythological painting. Upon returning to his homeland, he completed several orders from government agencies, including the large canvas “Valdemar II stadfäster jylländska lagen och Fredrik IV mottager slesvigarnas hyllning” for the Court of Appeal in Flensburg (at that time still part of Denmark), painting the porcelain composition “Ägirs d and the tapestry for the Copenhagen Town Hall , the altar painting “Herdarnas tillbedjan” for the church in his native Hellerup and the ceiling paintings “Gefion plöjer Själland ut ur Sverige”, “Gefion plöjer Själland ut ur Sverige” and “Danskarnas vikingatåg” in 18 Fredger Castle. In 1877 he became a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts , in 1890 received the title of professor, in 1894 the title of royal adviser of the 3rd rank.
He is primarily known as an engraver and book illustrator, including the author of illustrations for children's literature in France and Denmark. Illustrated including the works of Hans Christian Andersen and Jules Verne , as well as "History of Denmark" [da] Fabrizia [da] . The most famous genre paintings are Dagen efter den lilles födelse, olberg bevistar en teaterrepetition, Backantisk, Satyrfamilj, as well as a series of illustrations for the Scandinavian sagas Nordens gudar, completed in 1883. He had many awards, including the Order of Danebrog (1857), the Cross of Honor of Danebrog [en] (1898) and the rank of commander of this order of the 2nd degree (1901).
