Water supply and sewage systems in Azerbaijan

The water supply system is a set of designs for the provision of water with high quality and to the extent desired by consumers.

A drainage system (sewerage) is a combination of supplies, networks and structures designed for the cohesive reception and elimination of sewage from polluted waters outside populated areas, and for their purification and destruction before use or discharge into a reservoir.

One of the main parts of engineering structures for any project is water supply and sanitation. [one]

Today in Azerbaijan, special attention is paid to the use of water resources, the production and processing of rainwater, the introduction of the latest technologies in the renewal and protection of water resources, wastewater treatment, public water supply, etc. In a meeting with French businessmen, President Ilham Aliyev in his speech touched on the topic of future plans in Azerbaijan in the field of water supply and sanitation. History

In the XVIII century, the city was supplied with water from suburban wells. Water flowed in three channels. One of the channels headed to the Palace of Shirvanshahs. The remaining two channels were sent to the Gosh Gala Gapys. [3]

Haji Zeynalabdin Tagiyev (philanthropist of Azerbaijan) contributed money to search the water supply spring in Baku. During the drilling of wells near the village of Shollar, three horizons of drinking water were randomly found. By summer, the construction of two tunnels was completed: Balajar and Atachay. Water was pumped and pumped into tanks, water reached the city network, running 150 km. [four]

In the 1930s, the main pipelines and water disposal facilities were built and designated for use in Baku. A separate drainage system with two independent networks was created. The first network is for the disposal of municipal and clogged industrial wastewater with automatic treatment at stations located in the village of Zykh. For disposal and landfill without purification of wastewater arising from atmospheric precipitation, sewage - refers to the second network.

The drainage system in the main and southwestern sides of the city is relatively simple. Water disposal and rain networks, moving drains to the lower part of the city, merged with the main pipeline.

In 1970, a plan for rainwater drainage of Baku by the Giprocommundortrans University (Moscow) was created, which did not end. From 1997 to 1998, with the joint work of the Montgomery Watson and Azspetsprominvest enterprises, a plan was created for "Updating the water supply and sanitation systems of Greater Baku", covering the scheme of rainwater drainage. The project could not be completed. [five]

After gaining independence, Azerbaijan continued to work on the development of a water supply and sewage system. The construction of ten reservoirs is expected. [four]

Today, events are underway to update the boulevard (a significant lengthening is expected) and to cleanse the Baku port from pollution. [6]

New water supply and sanitation systems

The following water supply and sewage systems were opened:

  • The opening ceremony of drinking water and sewage systems.

· To provide clean water to the population, 11035 houses were connected to the water supply and sanitation network. Construction began in 2012. A sewerage pipeline with a diameter of 1000 mm and a size of 6905 m, a pressure pipe - 1734 m long and a polluted water network with a length of 186383 m were laid for the transportation of polluted waters. 4371 viewing wells were created on the water-cure network, houses are connected to this network. [7]

  • The opening ceremony of the Oguz - Gabala - Baku water supply.

It was announced that 40% of the city’s residents were provided with water all the time, and 60% on schedule. Approximately 75% of the city’s residents will be provided with permanent water after putting into use the Oguz-Gabala-Baku water supply, and the remaining 25% - according to the schedule. Scheduled water supply will double in time. [eight]

  • The ceremony formed with the completion of the project " Updates of the water supply and sanitation system of the city of Gobustan ."

A 68 km drinking water network was established in the city; all subscribers have meters. For the first time in Gobustan, a network of sewer lines was founded, the construction of which was completed with a size of 42 km and 1160 wells. A sewer pipeline of 7 km in size was created in the city to transport contaminated water to treatment plants. [9]

Reservoirs

Mingechevir reservoir

The Mingechevir reservoir was formed in 1959 on the Kura River during the construction of the Mingechevir hydroelectric station to extract water supply from populated areas and industrial activities, electricity, etc.

The reservoir area is 605 km², the volume is -16.1 km³, the length is 70 km, the greatest width is 18 km, the average depth is 26 m, the largest is 75 m. The filling was realized from 1953 to 1959.

The rivers Kura , Pora, Alazan and Ganjachai are the main tides of the Mingechevir reservoir . [ten]

Jeyranbatan Reservoir

Jeyranbatan reservoir was formed in 1955 on the Absheron peninsula . The goal was to increase the volume of drinking water in the cities of Baku and Sumgayit. [eleven]

The reservoir area is 13.9 square kilometers, volume - 186 million cubic meters, length - 8.74 km, greatest width 2.15 km, greatest depth - 28.5 m, average depth 14.5 m. [12]

Arak reservoir

The Arak reservoir is located in the West of Azerbaijan in Iran and in the Nakhchevan Autonomous Republic . It was created in 1971 on the Araks River during the construction of the Araks Hydroelectric Power Station near the city of Nakhchevan. [13]

The reservoir area is 145 km², volume - 1,254 km³. The average annual water exchange coefficient is 3.7. [14]

Presidential Decrees

Former President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev has developed a program in which updates were made to gas and water supply systems, wastewater and other utilities. Today, his son Ilham Aliyev continues the work of his father. [15] [16]

Decrees signed by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev are listed below:

  • Continuation of the project for updating water supply and sanitation systems in the villages of Pirallahi - Pirallahi district, Zir and Turkan-Khazar district of Baku. [17] [18]
  • Continuation of the project for updating water supply and sanitation systems in the city of Salyan.

In order to improve water supply and sanitation systems, to provide the population of Salyan with drinking water, construction of a reservoir began, the volume of which was 7500 cubic meters, diameter - 720 mm, size - 7.6 km. [nineteen]

  • Continuation of the project on updating water supply and sanitation in Bilasuvar city.

In order to improve water supply and sanitation systems, to provide the population of Salyan with drinking water, the construction of a sewer network began, the diameter of which was 200-500 mm, a magnitude of 4.36 km. [20] [21]

  • Continuation of the project for updating water supply and sanitation and storm water in Baku White City . [22]
  • Continuation of the project for updating water supply and sanitation systems in the village of Binagadi, Binagadi district and the villages of Mehtiabad and Novkhani of the Absheron region.

In the village of Binagadi, the diameter of the reservoir was 110-280 mm, the size is 9.0 km, the sewer network with diameters of 200-400 mm, the size is 0.6 km, in the village of Mehdiabad of the Absheron district sewer network the diameter is -300-1000 mm, the size is 3.9 km , in the village of Novkhany, the water network has a diameter of 110-280 mm, a magnitude of 2.5 km. [23]

  • Continuation of the project for updating water supply and sanitation in the city of Lankaran.

In order to improve water supply and sanitation systems and provide the population of Salyan with drinking water, construction of a reservoir began, with a diameter of 110 mm and a size of 11 km. [24]

  • Continuation of the project for updating water supply and sanitation in the city of Mingachevir. [25]
  • Continuation of the project for updating the city’s water supply and sanitation systems in the villages of Bina, Mardakan, Shagan and Shuvelan of the Khazar district. [26]
