He received an initial musical education from his father, but only at the age of 17 did he finally choose a musical career and, in particular, a cello as an instrument. He studied for some time at the Hague Conservatory, then in 1857-1859. studied in Paris with Leon Jacquard . In 1861 he made his solo evening debut in Paris, then made several successful tour trips to France and Germany, settled for a while in Colmar , then in Gebwiller . He performed in concerts with Clara Schumann and Julius Stockhausen .
In 1863-1868 the first cello of the Gewandhaus Orchestra , at the same time taught at the Leipzig Conservatory . In 1868-1872 in Frankfurt , among other things, he acted as an ensemble in the string quartet of Hugo Heerman . In 1872-1873 in the court orchestra in Karlsruhe , then went to the USA, where he performed in New York with a solo concert and for some time played in the orchestra of Theodore Thomas . Upon returning to Europe, he played in the Sondershausen Orchestra . From 1881 until the end of his life in Berlin, he was the soloist of the Royal Chapel and the Royal Berlin Opera .
