Biography

He was born on February 11, 1934 in Frankfurt. He studied English literature, history and political science at universities in Germany and England. In 1962 he graduated from the library school and in the same year got a job at the University Library of Frankfurt, then he headed the library school there. In 1970 he was elected director of the Württemberg State Library , he held this position until 1997. Since 1997 - retired.

The main scientific works are devoted to library science.

  • President of the European Foundation for Library Cooperation (1991–94).
  • IFLA President (1985).
  • Member of the International Commission for the Restoration of the Library of Alexandria.
