Born in the family of an artisan. He studied at the University of Leningrad . From 1925 he worked as a tutor, methodologist, teacher of biology. From 1929 he collaborated in children's and youth publications in Leningrad and Moscow with essays and notes on popular science topics.
With the beginning of the war, he was drafted into the army, was an ordinary sniper fighter on the Leningrad front (destroyed 11 German soldiers), then the lotsotrudnik of the Krasnoarmeyskoye Slovo newspaper of the 201st rifle Gatchina division (with the rank of lieutenant). He was awarded the medal " For the Defense of Leningrad " (1943), the Order of the Red Star (1945).
After the war - the editor of the Leningrad branch of Detgiz . For many years he was a friend of the family of Vitali Bianchi .
