Peter Barlow was born in the city of Norwich . In 1801, at the age of twenty-five, he was appointed teacher of mathematics at the Royal Military School in Woolwich (southeast London ) [1] [3] . In this post, Barlow worked until 1847 [2] . In 1823 he became a member of the Royal Society and two years later received the Copley Medal . Barlow paid much attention to locomotive building and met on railway commissions in 1836 , 1839 , 1842 and 1845 . • "Elementary Studies in Number Theory" ( 1811 )
  • "New Mathematical and Philosophical Dictionary" ( 1814 )

Barlow's research in the field of magnetism has led to an important practice for the discovery of methods of correcting or compensating for errors ( deviations ) of the ship's compass . In addition to compiling numerous useful tables, he made a great contribution to the compilation of Encyclopaedia Metropolitana. Peter Barlow also created several works on the theory of strength of materials, including "Essay on strength and stresses in wood" ( 1817 ) and "Monograph on the resistance of materials." The sixth edition ( 1867 ) of the first of these works was prepared by Barlow’s sons after his death and contains a biography of their father.

Also known for his work on electromagnetism ( Barlow's Wheel , or Barlovo Wheel [4] ), the arrangement of achromatic telescopes ( Lens Barlow ) [1] [3] .
