Career
In 1964, Heinrich Messner made his debut at the Olympics , where he performed only in downhill and closed there in tenth place, losing 2.58s to his fellow compatriot Zimmermann . Two years later, at the world championship in Chilean Portillo stopped a step away from the medal in the downhill, showing the fourth time.
In 1967, the World Cup was organized. The first start of the tournament took place on January 5, 1967 in Berchtesgaden , Germany , where the world's strongest athletes competed in slalom. The winner of the premiere stage was precisely Messner. At the same time, this victory was the only one for the Austrian in his career, despite the fact that in subsequent years he got to the cup podium 15 times. Messner finished the first cup season in second place in the overall standings, losing only to Jean-Claude Killy , who won twelve starts out of seventeen.
At the Grenoble Olympics, Messner became a bronze medalist in giant slalom, losing 2.55 to Jean-Claude Killy. In downhill, the Austrian became the fourth, in slalom showed the 14th result. According to the results of three types of programs, Messner showed the third sum in the standings of the combination and received the bronze medal of the World Cup (in 1968, the combination was not included in the Olympic program, therefore its results were considered only as the results of the World Cup).
In 1972, at the Sapporo Games, the 32-year-old Austrian started only in downhill and was able to win a bronze medal, losing 0.97 to Swiss skier Bernard Russi . After the Olympic season, he completed his sports career.
After finishing his career, he headed the women's national team of Austria, which he headed for two years. At this time, Messner's student Annemarie Moser-Prel twice won the overall standings of the World Cup. Later he headed his own ski school in Steinach an der Brenner .
