Biography

The son of Erich II of Saxe-Lauenburg and Agnes, daughter of Count Johann III of Holstein .

In 1373 he married Sophia Braunschweig-Luneburg, daughter of the Duke Magnus II , thereby putting an end to the long-standing hostility of the two clans, which were at war in 1362–1369.

In 1390, on June 14, he entered into an agreement with Lübeck, which made it possible to build the Shteknitsky Canal from the Elbe to the sea. The canal, which opened on July 22, 1398, connected the Hanseatic cities of Lauenburg, Luneburg, Hamburg and Lubeck by water.

In May 1401, a cousin of Erich IV, Erich III , died childless. Shortly before his death, he mortgaged part of his possessions to Lübeck, and the city made claims to these territories. However, Erich IV declared himself the sole heir to the deceased. The matter was decided through negotiations. Under the agreement of July 13, 1401, Möln departed Lübeck, the rest was received by the Duke of Saxe-Lauenburg.
