Biography
Nikolai Zakharovich Kheifets was born on October 2, 1888 in St. Petersburg. In 1910, he successfully graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in the trombone class (teacher, professor P. N. Volkov. For some time he served as a trombone artist in St. Petersburg orchestras. From 1915 to 1918 he served in the military, playing in the orchestra of the Life Guards Preobrazhensky Regiment .
In 1916 he studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory in the class of the theory of music and composition with professors J. Vitols and M. O. Steinberg . Conducting class attended optional. After the October Revolution, he participated in the creation of the Union of Art Workers (“RABIS”). From 1918 to 1930 he served as rector of the Don Conservatory in Rostov-on-Don, while teaching in the classroom composition, trombone and piano.
Since 1930, he worked in Baku as the head. Department of Composition of the Azerbaijan Conservatory (now the Azerbaijan State Music Academy). In 1932-1942 he was the head of the instrumentation department and taught at the Leningrad Conservatory. In 1938 he was approved as a professor. In 1940, he became one of the founders of the organizers of the Naval Faculty at the Leningrad Conservatory. During the Great Patriotic War he performed with concerts, organized concert bands, made musical arrangements for them.
In besieged Leningrad he was in severe physical exhaustion, was evacuated to Tashkent, where he died on April 22, 1942.
