Biography
From the peasants. After graduating from high school, in 1889-1894. studied theology at Yuriev University . During his studies, he was a member of the Lettonia student corporation in Latvia. In July 1896 he was ordained. He served as a pastor (1896-1899), teacher of the Riga Alexander Gymnasium (1899-1902), pastor of the church in Vecpiebalga (1902-1912).
Member of the First World War. He served as a Lutheran pastor on the Caucasus Front (1913-1918). During the war years of the Civil War in 1918-1920. - Pastor of the church in Taganrog , as well as the authorized representative of the Republic of Latvia in the North Caucasus (1919-1921).
Returning to Latvia in 1921-1925, he served as vicar and parish priest. At the same time, he was the director of the administrative and legal department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia (1921-1922).
In 1922 he was elected to the 1st Saeima of Latvia from the Latvian Peasant Union .
From January 26 to July 19, 1923 he served as Minister of Education of the Republic of Latvia.
In the years 1923-1935. He worked as the director of the First Riga State Gymnasium . At the same time, he was the pastor of the Lielvard parish (1925-1935) and the pastor of the Riga 5th Guards Regiment (since 1929).
In 1929-1931 - Director of the Monuments Department. Board member of the Latvian Red Cross and chairman of the Latvian Youth Red Cross (1923-1940). Editor of the newspaper Latvijas Jaunatne (1937-1940).
After Latvia joined the USSR in June 1941, he was arrested and deported with his wife and son to a labor camp in Vyatka ( Vyatlag ).
On November 25, 1942, P. Gailitis was sentenced to 10 years in prison by a special meeting of the NKVD of the USSR .
July 15, 1943 he died in the Kirov region in a camp hospital. [one]
