Biography
Born on June 12, 1912 at the Ruzayevka station in the Penza province . Descendant of the writer Vasily Ruban . Father, Pavel Semenovich Ruban, participated in the construction of the Kazan Railway [1] .
In the 1920s, the artist's family moved to Moscow to Solyanka . In 1927-1929 he studied at the studio of Xavier Pavlovich Chemko (Studio on Tverskaya), where he taught Dmitry Nikolayevich Kardovsky [1] . About five years Ruban wrote in the workshop of Igor Grabar .
In 1934 he began his creative career. In the years 1934-1935, Igor Ruban visited the workshop of K. K. Zefirov . In 1935, he made a creative trip to the oil fields of Kazakhstan , and then to the Caspian Sea [2] .
At the beginning of World War II he served as the foreman of a company in the militia in the Leningrad district of Moscow [3] .
In 1942 he graduated from the Moscow Art Institute [3] .
In 1944, as an ordinary member of the expedition, he entered the Arctic, where he began working on a polar theme. Member of Arctic expeditions, ice-breaking routes, expeditions to the islands of the Kara and Barents Seas, drift of the SP-4 station . The report on the trip to SP-4 was a personal exhibition of the works of IP Ruban in Moscow in 1954, which aroused great interest. In 1955, the USSR Ministry of Communications suggested that the artist make postage stamps with drawings of a drifting station [4] . In total, 4 stamps with the artist's drawings were issued (CFA No. 1851-1853, 1893). The Soviet artist publishing house issued postcards with his drawings.
He was part of the wintering team at the drifting stations "SP-13" , "SP-14" , "SP-15" , "SP-17" [5] . According to the recollections of the head of the SP-17 expedition, Yu. B. Konstantinov , Ruban wrote sketches from morning till night, made sketches to work at night — he tied a light bulb to a pencil [6] . The polar explorers proudly called IP Ruban “our artist” [7] . The result of the work of Ruban in the Arctic expeditions was his numerous paintings, as well as literary works.
In 1956-1957 he participated in the second continental Antarctic expedition . The sketches made during the trip at Mirny , Pionerskaya , Vostok stations and the Kooperatsiya motor ship were later included as illustrations in Igor Ruban's book Without Sunglasses [8] . Based on the sketches collected during the voyages and trips, I. Ruban wrote seventeen paintings for classrooms and classrooms of the Faculty of Geography for the main building of Moscow State University [9] . In the Museum of the Arctic and Antarctic, many of the themes of the exhibition are solved with the help of his paintings, specially written for the museum [9] .
The artist devoted more than forty years to the polar theme, creating an artistic chronicle of the development by the Russian people of the lands of the Arctic and Antarctica [10] . Ruban devoted a number of his works to well-known researchers of the past - Semyon Chelyuskin , Georgy Sedov , Vladimir Voronin and others. His personal exhibitions have been held since 1935 in Moscow, Leningrad, Vologda, Arkhangelsk, Murmansk and other cities [5] .
