Format

In each of the disciplines, one person from the team spoke. The winning team was determined by the highest score. Points were awarded as followsː for victory in the discipline - 8 points, 2nd place - 7 points, 3rd place - 6 points, 4th - 5 points, 5th - 4 points, 6th - 3 points, 7 8th - 2 points, 8th - 1 point. Disqualified, retired, and also not having scored attempts, participants did not receive a single point.

Competition

Ethiopian styer Miruts Ifter made a double in the second consecutive World Cup, winning distances of 5,000 and 10,000 meters.

American Edwin Moses , like Ifter, repeated his success two years ago. He again became the first in the 400 meters hurdles (47.53), losing only eight hundredths of a second to his own world record (47.45).

Another athlete who came close to his own record results was Marita Koch . She won the 400-meter race with a fourth time in history (48.97), and in the 4x400-meter relay race as part of the GDR team she showed the third result in the world top list (3.20.37).

Bright speeches in the sprint were marked by American Evelyn Ashford . It was she who did not allow Koch to win three victories in the tournament, ahead of the East German runner at a distance of 200 meters. To do this, Ashford had to set a new national record of 21.83, which lost 0.12 seconds to the world.

Team Championship

The women's team of the GDR won 7 out of 15 disciplines and confidently ahead of the Soviet team by 8 points. In the male part of the competition, athletes from the USA were stronger in the fight against the European team.

a In October 1979, the IAAF disqualified seven athletes from Eastern Europe due to positive doping tests. Among them was the Bulgarian middle-distance runner Totka Petrova . Doping testing at the Balkan Games in August 1979 revealed traces of the use of prohibited anabolic steroids by the athlete. In accordance with the rules, all the results of Petrova after a positive test were canceled, including the first place in the 1,500 meters race at the World Cup - 1979 with a score of 4.06.47 [1] .
