History

The management of the Moscow Metro has hatched plans for the construction of its own administrative building since the 1930s, but the first project appeared only in the 1950s. The architect Ivan Georgievich Taranov proposed covering the area of the Belorussky railway station with a powerful 2-story arcade, but the ground lobby of the Belorusskaya-Koltsevaya station became the only embodied element of this project. The opportunity to build a subway office was given to his son Andrei Taranov in collaboration with architects V. Ovchinnikov and V. Ginzburg and engineer L. Nefedova. The building was erected in 1978-1982 on Peace Avenue . It is noteworthy that Taranov Jr. built the building on the site of the old ground lobby of the metro station of the Kaluga-Riga line , erected on the former territory of the city estate of porcelain industrialist Matvey Kuznetsov [2] [3] . The building was commissioned in 1983, the services of the Moscow Metro finally moved to the Engineering Corps in 1986 [4] .

Gallery

In 2013, the Atrium Art Gallery was opened in the Engineering Corps. The gallery exhibits works by contemporary artists and classical painting. At the first exhibition, “The Age of 1812. Heroes and Battles ”in the“ Atrium ”were presented works from the collection of the museum-panorama“ Battle of Borodino ” [5] [6] .

Architecture

The engineering building occupied the space between Mira Avenue and Gilyarovsky Street . Due to its unusual shape, the building stood on the red lines of both streets, at the same time forming pedestrian walkways and small squares. The facades of the Engineering Building are decorated with complex panels of unpainted white concrete, the corners are smoothed, and this distinguishes it from the surrounding buildings. Such an innovative, brutalistic decision was dictated by considerations of economy: the Moscow Metro could not afford to be finished with natural stone, but its management building should have corresponded to “the most beautiful metro in the world”. The construction of the Engineering Corps was carried out by Moscow Metrostroy . In total, 642 cassettes were used in the design, each of which Taranov personally monitored the installation, every day at the construction site. The governing bodies of the Moscow Metro were located in a building overlooking Gilyarovsky Street, and the central parts of the buildings, which did not get sunlight, were allocated to control rooms: due to the responsible work of specialists who watched each train and escalator, even occasional glare was unacceptable. Premises for computers were also designed in the building, however, during the construction period, they significantly decreased in size, and computer rooms were redeveloped into warehouses [3] [2] .
