Maleira, Salvador

Born in the family of a Ashmore commercial businessman of modest means ^[1] . He was one of the youngest among six brothers and four sisters ^{[2] [3]} . Albertino Gomez da Silva, the father of Salvador Maleira, was a whiskey trader in Portuguese Angola . The family, known as Ratinhos , reigned in a cult of social mobility, vigorous advancement in life, and active overcoming difficulties ^[1] .

After school, Salvador Maleiro worked as a lifeguard on the beach, then as a night bartender. He graduated from the engineering department of the University of Porto . Specialist in fuel, energy, internal combustion engines. Trained in Paris , worked at the Renault Research Center. He also collaborated with Brazilian and European enterprises. Albertina Gomes was a longtime admirer of Francisco Sa Carneiro and an active supporter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Salvador Malleiro inherited from his father this political orientation. In 2004, he joined the PSD. Later joining the party gave rise to the nickname Cristão-novo - New Christian ^[5] .

In 2009, Salvador Maleiro first participated in party list elections in Aveiro County . He became the leading activist of the PSD organization in the city of Ovar . At that time the city was dominated by the Socialist Party (SP). Interestingly, the socialist mayor, Manuel Oliveira, was a longtime and good acquaintance of Maleira and offered him to join the joint venture. Subsequently, Oliveira provided Maleira with serious tacit support.

However, Salvador Maleiro managed to change the political alignment in the city and the region, dramatically strengthening the position of the SDP. He showed himself as a strong organizer and master of backstage political intrigue. In four years - from 2009 to 2013 - the Ovar SDP organization grew from 100 to 700 activists. Maleira led the district organization of the Social Democratic Party in Aveiro. At the same time, he successfully engaged in business, advising local branches of Portuguese and foreign firms.

At the same time, he joined the inner-party struggle for leadership. He supported Paulo Rangel in the confrontation with Pedro Pasush Coel and Jose Pedro Aguiar Branco . After Pasush Coelho, who soon headed the government, took over, Maleira became close to him and was surrounded by the Prime Minister . At the same time, a political alliance of Salvador Maleira with the mayor of Porto Rui Riu arose ^[1] .

Mayor of Owara

In 2013, Salvador Maleira was elected mayor of Owara. PSD gained a majority in the city council. Despite the fact that the party was in power at the national level at that time, a change of power in Ovar was considered a major political success.

The mayor of Maléiro implements a number of economic and social development programs in the city. It is very popular among the townspeople. At the same time, the management style of Maléiro is characterized as “modern Cacicism ” (in this regard, comparisons are possible with figures such as Joaquin Ferreira Torres or Abiliu di Oliveira - adjusted for the difference from the times of the New State and the Hot Summer ).

The prominent partner of the mayor's office and adviser to Maleira is the large entrepreneur Pedro Coelho - the head of Safina , an activist of the PSD and the sponsor of the city football club. Coelho’s ties with Maleira led to a public scandal over the uncontested provision of Safina contracts worth 2.2 million euros to create lawns for football fields and other profitable work ^[6] .

Role in the election of the chairman

In October 2017, Pedro Pasush Coelho announced his resignation as chairman of the PSD. The successor candidates were former Prime Minister Pedro Santana Lopez (representative of the party’s right wing) and ex-mayor Porto Rui Riu (representative of the left wing). The leader was determined by the vote of all interested party members.

The Rui Riu campaign was led by Salvador Maleira. In the elections of January 13, 2018 , Rui Riu won. The “operational machine” of Maleira was called by observers a decisive factor in the election of Rio ^[5] . Maleira announced the great victory of the Social Democratic Party on the eve of the 2019 election and announced his intention to "be at the forefront of the struggle for the best for the party" ^[7] . He also opposed proposals for centralizing fiscal policy ^[8] .

There is no ideological emphasis in the political attitudes of Salvador Malheiro, except statements of allegiance to the precepts of Sa Carneiro (which is characteristic of all the leaders of the Social Democratic Party, with any ideology and political course). Maleira is known as a pragmatic, focused on good governance . His own intentions relate to the election to the European Parliament and the post of Minister of the Environment. Claims of Malayro to preside over the party are supposed. The position of Salvador Malleiro at Rui Rio is characterized as the role of the “ gray cardinal ”, Richelieu or Rasputin ^[9] .

Since 1999, Salvador Maleira has been married to Barbara Rola Ribeiro Garcia di Mura. Has a daughter Leonor, sons of Salvador Jr. and Zhuakina ^[10] . The brothers and sisters of Salvador Maleira are known as professionals in various fields - from medicine to football ^[1] .
