History

The settlement from which the city later grew was founded in 1750 [1] . The municipality of El Guamo was separated into a separate administrative unit in 1838.

The city is located in the northeastern part of the department, at the foot of the northeast slope of the Maria Mountain Range, west of the Magdalena River , approximately 65 kilometers southeast of the city of Cartagena , the administrative center of the department. The absolute height is 105 meters above sea ​​level [2] .
The municipality of El Guamo borders in the north with the territory of the municipality of Kalamar , in the south and west with the municipality of San Juan Nepomuseno , in the east with the territory of the department of Magdalena . The area of ​​the municipality is 390 km² [1] .

Population

According to the 2005 census, men accounted for 54.2% of the population of El Guamo, women - respectively, 45.8%. Racially, whites and mestizos accounted for 99.9% of the city's population; Negroes , mulattoes and Raysals - 0.1% [4] . The literacy rate of the entire population was 73%.

Economics

The basis of the economy of El Guamo is agriculture and fishing [1] .
75.5% of the total number of urban and municipal enterprises are trade enterprises, 22.3% are industrial enterprises, 2.1% are service enterprises, 0.1% are enterprises of other sectors of the economy [4] .
