Burnet ( born Burnet ) - a city in the United States , located in central Texas , the administrative center of the eponymous district . According to the 2010 census, the number of inhabitants was 5987 people, according to the US Census Bureau in 2016, 6359 people lived in the city [2] .

History
Before the city appeared, the inhabitants of the region sought protection from the attacks of the Indians in the nearby Fort Krogan fortress. The region, as well as the nearby creek, was often called Hamilton after the owner of the land. In 1852, Burnet County was founded and the city of Hamilton was created. In August there was an open post office in the city, which was called the "Courthouse at Burnet." In 1857, city residents signed a petition to change the name of the city to Burnet, since the name Hamilton was already taken by another city . The name change took place in 1858. The first vote on the charter of the city took place in 1876, however, to adopt the charter, a second vote was taken in 1883 [3] .
In April 1882, the Austin and Northwestern Railroad came to the city, the city began to grow more actively and turned into a large transportation center for 10 years, until 1892, when the railway was continued in Llano, after which Burnet remained the center of farming and cattle breeding [3 ] .

According to the US Census Bureau , the area of the city is about 26.3 km 2 , of which 26.2 km 2 is occupied by land, and less than 0.1 km 2 is the water surface [4] .

According to the 2010 census, 5987 people lived in the city, there were 2041 households and 1353 families. The racial makeup of the city: 86.9% are white , 5.4% are African Americans , 1% are Native Americans, 0.7% are Asians , 0.1% (4 people) are residents of Hawaii or Oceania, 4.1% - other races, 1.9% - two or more races. The number of Hispanic residents of any race was 20.1% [8] .
Out of 2041 households, children under 18 live in 34.6%. 47.3% of households were couples living together (19.1% with children under 18 years of age), women lived without husbands in 14.8% of households, men lived without wives in 4.2% of households, 33.7% of households were not families. Only one person lived in 29.9% of households, 15.3% were single elderly people (over 65). The average household size was 2.49 people. The average family size is 3.07 people [8] .
The population of the city by age range was as follows: 25.5% are residents under the age of 20, 28.9% are between the ages of 20 and 39, 28% are between 40 and 64, and 17.7% are 65 and older. The average age is 36.8 years [8] .
According to surveys of five years from 2012 to 2016, the average household income in Burnet is $ 45,000 per year, and the average household income is $ 47,103. The per capita income for the city is $ 18,557. About 22.3% of families and 34.2% of the population are below the poverty line. Including 39.9% under the age of 18 years and 7.3% over 65 years of age [9] .

The city is managed by the mayor and the city council, consisting of 6 people, elected by the whole city. Council members are elected for a term of 2 years and cannot be elected for more than 3 consecutive terms [10] .

Infrastructure and transport
The main highways passing through Burnet are:
- US 281 motorway runs north from Lampasas south to Johnson City .
- Texas State Motorway 29 runs east from Georgetown west to Llano .
The city is home to Burnet / Kate Craddock Field Municipal Airport. The airport has one runway 1524 meters long [12] . The closest commercial airport is Killeen / Fort Hood Regional Airport. The airport is located about 65 kilometers northeast of Burnet.
Education
The city is served by the Burnet Consolidated Independent School District.
Economics
According to the city’s financial report for the 2016 fiscal year, Burnet owned $ 81.76 million in assets, the city’s debt amounted to $ 32.86 million. The city’s income for the fiscal year 2016 was $ 28.44 million, and expenses were approximately $ 21.67 million [13] .
Recreation and Entertainment
Highland Lakes, Longhorn Cavern State Parks, and Inks Lake State Park are located in the region near the city.
Burnet houses the Highland Lakes Air Museum and the Fort Crogan Museum.
