Story
Two days later - the birthday of the youngest daughter Denise, and the entire Kanten family, who lives in the Jura Mountains on a remote farm, is waiting for the arrival of the eldest daughter, Marie-Louise, at the home holiday. Two years ago, their mother, Isabella, who dreams of a comfortable life for her daughters, known to her only from women's magazines such as Elle , sent her to Lyon to study as a hairdresser. But in the morning the postman brings a short telegram: Marie-Louise has a lot of work, so she cannot come. Under pressure from his wife, the farmer overcomes his reluctance to go to a city where he was not 20 years old to convince these employers to give their daughter a little rest. Together with the village teacher Frederick, whom Kanten hopes to get in-law, they get to the station Zheks , and there they take the train to Lyon. Upon arrival in the city, they go to the hairdresser, where Marie-Louise should work, but they discover that the girl left there two years ago. Now she takes care of the clients of some “Trianon”: a beauty salon for men, which in fact turned out to be nothing more than a brothel. But there they do not catch Marie-Louise. By misunderstanding, after spending the night at the police station, the next morning they again go in search of the girl, but whenever they expect to meet her, they are told that she is no longer there. Each of the characters they met, who knew or know Marie-Louise, gives her a new image, strange, very different from what her father appreciates, and gradually he understands how his daughter earns a living.
They still do not find Marie-Louise, who, as it turns out, went to Paris as a kept woman.
They will return together to the village, keeping secret the bitter truth. Kanten will delight the youngest daughter with a gift given to her, supposedly, from her older sister, and his wife will be amazed by the story of the wonderful life that Marie-Louise now leads, hastening to leave for her garden so that they do not notice his tears.
Commentary on the film
As Denis de La Patelier said in an interview in 2012, he always had an excellent relationship with the stars, because he loved the actors. Fernandel was the only one with whom he initially had some problems. La Patelier first met Fernandel in 1949 as an assistant to the director Maurice Labro on the set of the comedy L'Héroïque Monsieur Boniface (Heroic Monsieur Boniface) and then made an impression of him as a “bore” (“emmerdeur”), who built everything on the set. Later, Fernandel agreed to the producer Roger Ribado-Dumas ( French: Roger Ribadeau-Dumas ) to shoot only on the condition that La Patelier will not be an assistant director in that picture. But over the years, their feelings evolved, and Fernandel asked La Patelier to become the director of this film adaptation, where the actor, known primarily as a comedian, played one of his most dramatic roles. The film was created based on the novel of the same name by the writer Bernard Clavel, but the script, written by Denis de La Patelier together with the writer and screenwriter Pascal Jardin, differed from the book in that in a literary source Kanten travels to Lyon in search of his daughter alone, while in the film the main character was provided with an interlocutor, teacher Frederick. In “Father's Trip”, La Patelier’s first experience with Pascal Jardin was held, which was offered to the director by his faithful co-worker Michel Odyar , who refused to write the script because of his busy schedule . La Patelier called the collaboration with Jarden one of the most remarkable memories of his career. [one]
“Father's Trip” is one of the few films when the director himself appears on the screen as an extras, as he did when there was no actor at hand. [one]
The future spouse of the director Florence Renard ( French Florence Renard ) works as an assistant to the editor.
