Career
Georg Toma made his international debut in 1958 at the World Championships in Finnish Lahti , where he showed fourteenth place on the springboard, and the combined biathlon showed the sixteenth result.
The most successful for George was the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley . In the double- event competition, the German won the jump part of the competition, and in the 15 km ski race he showed the fifth time, retaining his leadership in the sum of the two types of programs. Toma became the first Olympic champion in Nordic combined skiing from a non-Nordic country.
In the early 1960s, he actively participated in ski jumping , in 1960, 1961 and 1963 he became the champion of Germany in this form. In the 1961/62 season, he won the stage of the prestigious Four-Springboard Tour , which took place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen .
In 1964, he was the standard bearer of the German United Team at the opening ceremony of the Games in Innsbruck . In the double- event competition, Georg Thoma was unable to defend his Olympic title even though he won the jump. In the race for 15 kilometers, he became only the tenth, and in the total biathlon he won a bronze medal, losing to the Norwegian Knutsen and the Soviet athlete Nikolai Kiselev . In the same year he was awarded the Holmenkollen medal.
In 1966, at the World Championships in Oslo, Georg Toma won his only world championship medal, becoming the first in the double event.
After finishing his sports career, he worked as a postman in his native Hinterzarten. He also worked on German television as a sports commentator.
