The song “Sad Girl” was written by Lana Del Rey in collaboration with musician and producer Rick Nowells [1] ; the vocal track was produced by him and recorded at The Green Building studios, Santa Monica , in 2013 [1] . After meeting the singer with musician Dan Auerbach in one of the clubs in New York [6], they decided to re-record the arrangements of all Ultraviolence tracks at his Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville , Tennessee [1] . The song was released on June 13, 2014, along with the release of the album Ultraviolence on the labels of Interscope and Polydor [2] .
According to the singer from the interview for the British newspaper The Guardian , “Sad Girl” was written under the inspiration of the “wrong relationship”: “I was in different relations with men, with people, these relations were in some sense wrong, but still they were beautiful to me. ” [4] In an audio interview for the German division of MTV , Del Rey spoke about the song: “I am sometimes a sad girl. Still sometimes things happen that are out of my control. Sometimes I do what I want, instead of what I really have to do. ” [7] The singer also compared “Sad Girl” with another track on the record, “ Shades of Cool ”: “She’s the same in a blues tone reminds me in many ways of“ Shades Of Cool ”, and is thus subordinated to the mood of the whole record” [ 7] . Del Rey has never performed a song at concerts, but on November 24, 2017, meeting with fans in West Hollywood , the singer performed a cappella version of “Sad Girl” [8] .
The composition and reaction of critics
The composition “Sad Girl” combines such genres as jazz [3] and blues-rock [9] . Recorded at a 4/4 time signature and in D-D key [10] , the song's instrumentation consists of an electric and acoustic guitar, synthesizer , percussion and mellotron [1] . Del Rey's vocals cover a range from Note C 3 to Re 5 [10] . The song sounds at a rather slow tempo 63 beats per minute [10] . Reviewer Kenneth Partridge from Billboard , evaluating the tracks Ultraviolence , called the song "the most touching on the record"; She noted: “Del Rey talks about an important meeting, speaking of herself as the“ bitch on the side ”of her boyfriend, however, the words of the chorus suggest that the performer has a different opinion. “He has fire,” she sings, deeply offended, but knowing what's what, unsure of how long she will want to burn. [5] Speaking about the genre, the critic of the British newspaper The Guardian noted that “jazz performance” of the song is the kind of genre that “Del Rey’s vocal is incredibly suitable for” [3] .
Al Horner from NME praised the song, calling it one of the “ manifestos ” Del Rey on the disc [11] . Horner compared the image of a girl from “Sad Girl” with a “female ideal” from the composition “The Other Woman” performed by Nina Simon [11] . The critic added that "" Sad Girl "sounds like an awkward attempt at seduction in a fashionable club and describes a prostitute in love, in whose power it is only covertly threatening to commit an imprudent act" [11] . Jazz Monroe, who is also a critic of NME magazine , compiled a list of the best songs of Del Rey, where “Sad Girl” is in sixth position [12] . “The intriguing fact of Del Rey’s ascent is that she often sounds like the less attractive hymns of solitude by Lykka Li [12] . Karin Ganz from Rolling Stone described the composition as “bright and graceful” and remarked: ““ Sad Girl ”is a largely recurring theme of Del Rey. “I’m a bad girl / I’m a sad girl,” she says; her voice smoothly moves from a sincere “yes, well?” to soothing mien ” [13] . Reviewers of Complex magazine also compiled a list of the best compositions of Del Rey, placing “Sad Girl” on the last 24th position [14] ; Ross Scarano emphasized: “When she sings“ I am burning, baby, ”her voice becomes louder, and you understand what exactly keeps her here, on the side” [14] .
