Lucien Hector Jonas ( fr. Lucien Hector Jonas ; April 8, 1880 , Anzen - September 20, 1947 , Paris ) - French artist. It is considered one of the most prolific French artists of the first half of the twentieth century.

Biography

Lucien Hector Jonah was born April 8, 1880 in the French commune of Anzen [5] in a wealthy family. His father, Hubert Émile (1849-1902), a native of Belgium, had his own distillery. His mother, Anna Emilia (née Carpentier) early discovered the artistic abilities of her son and encouraged them in every way. Jona studied in the city of Valenciennes with the artist Joseph Lairow, then studied in Paris , at the School of Fine Arts with the artists Albert Maignan, Leon Joseph Florentin Bonna and Henri Joseph Arpini .

After the death of his father in 1902, Zhona returned to Anzen, where he helped his mother manage the distillery. In his hometown, he discovered plots for his paintings. The painting “Consolations” drawn during these years brought the artist a silver medal at the 1905 Exhibition Salon. In 1908, Jonah married Suzanne Louise Bedorez. Three children were born in the marriage.

In 1911, the Supreme Council of Fine Arts awarded the artist a national prize for the painting "La Consultation". In 1912, he painted many portraits; in 1914, he bought a large house in Paris. In 1915 he was appointed a military artist at the Army Museum in Paris. He created portraits of military leaders for the museum, drawings for French magazines L'Illustration , The Annals, Readings for All and for newspapers. During these years he painted about four thousand drawings and about eight hundred paintings.

In 1916 he was appointed official artist of the fleet. He painted battle scenes. Many of his paintings adorned public buildings. In 1929 he was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor .

Since 1933, he collaborated with the Bank of France, created images for French banknotes. He became the author of banknotes Ten Francs Miner and Twenty Francs Fisherman .

During the Second World War he painted illustrations for newspapers, anti-fascist posters, portraits of miners, industrial landscapes. In 1944 he created portraits of generals Koenig , Edgard de Larminat (Paris, Museum of the Order of Liberation ) and Latre de Tassigny . In 1945, he was awarded at the Salon for painting a fourteen-meter mural consisting of one hundred and twenty characters called Furor Teutonicus .

In 1946, Lucien Jonah, already a sick man, created fourteen paintings for the church of Saint Martin in the French commune of Saint-Aman-les-O [6] .

In 1947 he returned to Paris, where he died on September 20. Buried in La Flèche.

Currently, the artist’s paintings are stored in New York - at the Metropolitan Museum of Art , in several French museums ( Carnival [7] , Valenciennes Museum of Fine Arts, City Museum of Saint-Amand-les-Eaux Abbey Tower), in the Royal Palace of Bangkok (Thailand ), in private collections. Many of his works were destroyed during World War II.

Currently, in the city of Anzen, a bust is set for the artist, sculptor Aime-Gustave Blaise.
