Karl Chernig, Baron von Cherngausen ( German: Karl Czörnig ; May 5, 1804, Czech Republic , Czech Republic - October 5, 1889, Gorizia , Italy ) - Austrian ethnographer , historian , statesman, director of administrative statistics in Vienna. [3] .

Biography
In the period 1848-1949. He was a deputy of the Frankfurt national fees, in the period 1852-1863. - Head of the Imperial Central Commission for the study and protection of monuments. In 1865, Mr .. elected chairman of the Committee on Statistics and Administration in the Empire. He managed to convince the Austrian government to allow the publication of official statistical materials. In 1846, first appeared in print under his editorship, “Tafeln zur Statistik oesterr. Monarchie ”for 1842 (published until 1856) He worked as the head of the department at the Ministry of Commerce. Here he took up the organization of institutions involved in shipping and maritime trade. Later, when he worked as head of the railway department, he drafted a law on railway concessions and drafted a railway network for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. According to his plans, in 1863 the Central Statistical Commission for the whole empire was founded, of which he was chairman until 1865 [4] .
Karl Chernig's map Ethnographic Map of the Austrian Monarchy (Ethnographische Karte der osterreichischen Monarchie, entworfen von Karl Freiherrn Czernig, herausgegeben von der kk Direktion der administrativen Statistik) was published in Vienna in 1855. The scale of the map is 1855, 864. 1 000 000. Scale 1 806 see. The map was published for the first time in 1855, the second edition of 1856, later in Karl Chernig's monograph Ethnography of the Austrian Monarchy (Ethnographie der oesterr. Monarchie) 1857. The map was reprinted several times, in particular in 1868 g.
The work of Karl Chernig “Ethnography of the Austrian Monarchy” became the foundation of all subsequent studies of the ethnic composition of the Austrian (since 1867 - Austro-Hungarian) empire.
