O-Medoc ( Fr. Haut-Médoc ) is a subregional appellation of Bordeaux , on the left bank of the mouth of the Gironde . Covering most of the vineyard strip of land along the Medoc Peninsula, it occupies approximately 60 kilometers (37 miles) of its length.
It borders on Bordeaux in the south and Medoc in the north.
Of the fifteen wine communes of Haut-Médoc, eight are located along the promenade of Garonne and Gironde: Blancfort, Parempuyr, Ludon, Macau, Archins, Lamarck, Koussac and Saint-Serin-de-Cadurn. Seven communes lie inland: Le Taillan, Le Pian-Médoc, Avensan, Saint-Laurent-Médoc. Saint-Sauveur, Sissac and Vertuil.
All 15 wine communes have the right to produce wines under the name Haut-Médoc AOC, but 9 of them also fall under communal appellations.

A few of the farms under the common name Haut-Médoc were included in the Official Wine Classification in Bordeaux in 1855 (since all but 6 of 61 are located within the AOC Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe), but several were included in the Cru Bourgeois classification.
