History

A wooden Orthodox church, consecrated in honor of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary , was first mentioned in the village of Volkonsk in 1628 [2] . The parish of the temple included the village of Volkonsk and the villages of Druzhno , Lukino , Finger , Popovka [3] . In 1769, a new wooden temple building was built, which survived until the 1980s. The Volkonskaya church was the only one in Dmitrovsky district built on the site, and not bought in another village and transported disassembled [4] . According to other sources, the temple building was still bought and transported from the village of Khoteev . It belonged to the first deanery district of Dmitrovsky district [5] . The type of temple building was an octagon on a quad [6] .

In 1866, a seminary graduate Semyon Pokrovsky [7] became the priest of the Nativity Church. In the same year, the clerk of the church, Yegor Lampadsky, died [8] .

In Soviet times, the temple was closed. Due to the dilapidated nature of the 1980s, the church was demolished and transported to Oryol on the territory of a self-supporting restoration site. It was proposed to assemble the temple building on the site of the former Oryol Nativity Cathedral , which stood in the fortress. The churches were similar in architectural form. However, this did not happen and the church decayed in disassembled form, and its remains were written off [9] . In this regard, October 24, 1991 was excluded from the list of monuments of history and culture [10] . The metric books of the temple were not preserved.

Currently, in Volkonsk, at the place where the temple was, a cross is installed.
