Jara van Kerkhof was born in the city of Zoetermeer , province of South Holland . She has been training since 2001 on the basis of the IJsvereniging Zoetermeer club under the leadership of Jeroen Otter. Studied at The Hague University of Applied Sciences , where she studied the internal processes of a person during recovery and sports ((Human Movement Science (HMS)). She is the sister of another Dutch short-tracker - Sanne van Kirkhof [2] . For her character and athletic qualities, Yara was nicknamed “ Pit Bull ” [3] .

Van Kerckhof won her first medal at an international competition during the 2011 World Short Track Championships in Sheffield , UK . Her team in the women's relay at 3000 m with a score of 4: 17.725 took the second place in the race, ahead of rivals from Canada (4: 18.043 - 3rd place), but lost the championship to athletes from China (4: 16.295 - 1st place) [ 4] [5] .

Van Kerkoff's next silver medal was won at the 2018 European Short Track Championships in Dresden . In the 1500m race with a score of 2: 37.373, she took second place, ahead of the athlete from Hungary (2: 37.689 - 3rd place), but lost the lead to a competitor from Italy (2: 36.889 - 1st place) [6 ] .

At the 2018 Winter Olympics, Van Kirkhof was declared to participate in the race at 500 and 1000 meters [7] [8] [9] .
On February 13, 2018, during the final women's 500m race, Van Kerckhof finished third with a result of 43.256. From the very start and up to the last, fifth round, she went fifth. Everything changed at the last corner before the finish. An incident helped her to get ahead, immediately overtaking two rivals, when the South Korean short-track player Choi Min John (who finished second) crashed into a British woman, Eliza Christie, during a turn. After the meeting, the judges decided to disqualify Choi Min John. Thus, van Kirkhof took second place, losing to Italian Arianna Fontane (42.569 - 1st place), but ahead of Canada Kim Buten (43.881 - 3rd place) [1] [10] [11] .
