Creation History

In 1851, Vernu met a fellow countryman from Nantes (known as Pitre-Chevalier), who was the editor-in-chief of the journal Musée des familles [1] . He was looking for an author who could write fascinatingly about geography, history, science and technology without losing the educational component. Verne, with his inherent thirst for science, especially geography, turned out to be a suitable candidate [3] . The first printable short story, The First Ships of the Mexican Navy, was published by Peter-Chevalier in July 1851. In a letter to his father, Jules Verne admitted that he created the story under the influence of the adventure novels of Fenimore Cooper [1] . Since then, Jules Verne in his works combined an adventure novel and adventure with historical excursions [4] . Since 1857, the story began to be translated into other languages.

Verne will also describe the real case of rioting on a ship in the story “ The Rebels from the Bounty ”, in the novels “The Journey and Adventures of Captain Hatteras ” and “Uncle Robinson” [5] .

Story

“On October 18, 1825, Spanish ships, the Asia corvette and the Constance eight-gun brig , dropped anchor in the port of one of the Mariana Islands - Guam ” [6] . Two warships of the once powerful Spanish maritime power heading for the Philippines . A riot breaks out under the leadership of Lieutenant Martinez and Mars sailor Jose. They want to capture the ship and sell it to the young Mexican Confederation . For the betrayal and death of captain Don Ortev, he vows to avenge Young Pablo. Together with the senior sailor Jacopo, he secretly leaves the rebel camp.

In Acapulco, Martinez and Jose are sent to the capital of Mexico for permission of the new president on the issue of ships. However, in this journey they are haunted by failures, which are perceived as ominous omens. Martinez on the verge of insanity kills Jose and rushes to the canyon. At the other end of the bridge, Pablo appears in front of him, but the return trip is also cut off, since Jacopo stands there. Pablo and Jacopo cut strong vines, and the bridge, together with Martinez, falls into the abyss.

“That's how the Mexican Navy was born. Of the Spanish courts sold by traitors to the new Republican government. These ships laid the foundation for a small squadron, which then fought with the American military vessels for California and Texas ” [6] .
