Biography
A self-taught cellist, Schiffer worked as an accountant before entering the outstanding teacher David Popper at the Budapest Conservatory . Then he became Popper's assistant in 1900 , and after the death of the latter in 1913 , replaced him, occupying the cello department until 1939 . Schiffer's students were several generations of Hungarian musicians, including Janos Starker , Gabor Reyto , Tibor de Makula , Vera Denesh , Matthias Scheiber . The author of the book “Cello Technique” ( Hungarian. A gordonkajáték metodikája ), reprinted in 2001 with a foreword by Starker.
