Production
In May 2017, Netflix announced the start of work on the English-language adaptation of the series of novels by the Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski “The Witcher ”. Developed by Sean Daniel Company and Platige Image [1] . In December 2017, it became known that Lauren Schmidt Hissrich was appointed show runner of the project [3] . In January 2018, it was announced that the script for the pilot episode was completed [4] . In April 2018, it became known that the first season will consist of eight episodes and that filming will take place in Central Europe [5] [6] .
Filming of the first season started in Hungary on October 31, 2018 [7] . In March 2019, filming took place on the islands of Gran Canaria , Palma and La Gomera , which are part of the Canary Islands archipelago [8] . The filming period officially ended on May 30, 2019 [9] .
In April 2019, Netflix spokesman Ted Sarandos told investors that the premiere of the first season is scheduled for the end of 2019 [10] .
Dispute over cast
In September 2018, it became known that the BAME category actress was being searched for the role of the heroine Tsiri, which stands for “black, Asian, or a representative of another ethnic minority,” although the character in the story has white skin and hair [11] . This caused a flurry of indignation among fans of the series, who noticed that the image of non-European characters is inappropriate in the plot, which takes place in a fictional world, the source of inspiration of which was medieval Poland, which was distinguished by its mono-ethnicity [12] . Lauren Schmidt Hissrich refused to confirm the fact that Ciri can be played by a non-white actress, noting that the film takes place in a fictional world and should not thoroughly claim historical authenticity. After this report, Lauren became a victim of cyberbullying [13] . This news also caused outrage among many Internet users from Poland, who accused Americans of disrespect and denigrating Polish culture, demanding that the actress of Slavic origin be taken on the role of Ciri [14] . Soon a new report from the developers appeared, according to which an actress of Polish descent was looking for the role of Ciri, and the definition of BAME could also mean a person from Eastern Europe [15] [16] .
A number of American media outlets condemned the indignation of users, accusing them of racism and hate propaganda [17] [18] [19] [20] . For example, the Forbes editor noted that he would be glad to see an Asian or black as Ciri and hoped that she would not become a victim of Internet bullying. This statement outraged the fans of the series, especially the Slavs, who considered this disrespect for the original series. Fans are also outraged by racism towards white people of the aforementioned editor. [21] .
