Magellanic premium

Magellanic Premium - Award of the American Philosophical Society , the oldest scientific award in the United States .

Founded in 1786 with 200 guineas provided by “for the gold medal, awarded from time to time on time, to the author of the best discovery or most useful invention in the field of navigation, astronomy or natural philosophy (excluding natural history) ".

Over the past 215 years, it has been awarded 32 times: 12 times in the field of navigation, the same number in natural philosophy, and eight times in astronomy.
