Origin and first marriage
Born in the famous Danish family of German origin. Eric Seidenfaden , the father of Sno Abacassish, was the founder of the large Copenhagen newspaper Dagbladet Information , led an active anti-Nazi propaganda, during the Second World War, spoke on the side of the anti-Hitler coalition and collaborated with British intelligence . Jutte Kaastrup-Olsen, the mother of Sno Abekassish, was also a well-known leftist journalist. Several relatives of Snu Abekassish participated in the resistance movement .
Since childhood, Ebba got the nickname Snu - Snoo (in Danish : “smart”, “sly”), which gradually became her personal name [2] . Early years spent in Stockholm . Then she studied at an English boarding school.
In London, Snoo met Vasch Abekassish, a Portuguese businessman of Jewish descent. In 1961 she married Abekassish. For some time they lived in the United States , then moved to a residence in Portugal . In marriage, the couple Abekassish had three children - the son of Ricardo, the daughters Mikael and Rebecca [3] .
Opposition Publishing
According to the family tradition, Snu Abekassish adhered to left-wing political views, was fully committed to the concept of human rights . The Portuguese New State was deeply hostile to her. She rejected the Salazarist dictatorship with its ultraconservative ideology, condemned the repression of PIDE , did not accept patriarchal mores. But in the second half of the 1960s, there were already opportunities for the expression of opposition views in Portugal.
On October 1, 1965, Snu Abacassish was established in Lisbon by the publishing house Dom Quixote - Don Quixote (the name had a non-conformist meaning). Such authors as the feminist poetess Maria Teresa Orta , the socialist poetess Sophia de Melu Brainer , the opposition poets Rui Belo , Antonio Ramus Rosa , Erberto Elder , Alexandre O'Neil , the poets and the activist activist and collaborator of the activist and opposition activist collaborated with the publisher Sno Abaquassish; Natalia Correia . The house of Sno Abekassish turned into a kind of meeting place for the anti-government intelligentsia [4] .
Publications of Dom Quixote promoted civil and political freedoms, denounced authoritarian tyranny and clerical hypocrisy, and protested against the Vietnam War . In 1967, Snu Abekassish organized a brief visit to Portugal by the Soviet poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko [2] (the result was the poem Love in Portuguese [5] ). At the same time, Snu Abekassish supported not only the Portuguese anti-authoritarian opposition and Western leftist movements, but also Soviet dissidence . In the "Dom Quixote" published works of Alexander Solzhenitsyn .
The activities of Sno Abekassish caused serious discontent with PIDE. Circulations of publications were confiscated several times. Snu Abacassish used conspiracy methods to store Dom Quixote materials [6] . The secret police raised the issue of closing the publishing house. However, the relevant decision was regularly postponed by the government for reasons of foreign policy image.
The actual marriage to Sa Carneiro
On April 25, 1974, the Portuguese Rose revolution overthrew the “New State” regime. All political freedoms, including freedom of the press, have been established in the country. Snu Abekassish was actively involved in political journalism. The publishing house has planned the publication of speeches by the leaders of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Socialist Party (SP) and the Communist Party (PCP).
During the preparation of this project in January 1976, Natalia Correia introduced Snu Abacassish to SDP leader Francisco Sa Carneiro . A mutual feeling immediately arose between Sleep and Francisco (of which Correia had warned in advance) [3] .
A politician who was not familiar with Sleep — either personally or in absentia — contacted Correia. After listening to him, she unexpectedly issued: “She is a sleeping princess who rests in an ice crypt awaiting a prince who will wake her up with a hot kiss. The prince is you. Call her and invite her to the restaurant for lunch. ” Then Natalie phoned Sna: “My girl, the fairy-tale prince, whom you expect, will appear before you” [7]
After several meetings, they decided to connect. Despite the fact that both were married, Abekassish had three children, Sa Carneiro - five. Francisco Sa Carneiro and Snu Abacassis publicly stated their intentions (the social status of Sa Carneiro in any case excluded concealment). Vashka Abekassish agreed to a divorce. However, Isabel Sa Carneiro replied with a categorical refusal. The Sa Carneiro family has broken up. Francisco and Sleep entered into a de facto marriage relationship [3] and began living together in Lisbon with one of their sons, Francisco Jr. (for whom Sleep expressed its intention to “re-educate” [7] ). Isabel Sa Carneiro with four children lived in Porto .
The conservative society of Portugal in the 1970s was generally negative about what was happening. Political circles, the Catholic Church, party leaders and activists were outraged by the behavior of the SDP leader. The accusatory campaign was led by the leader of the joint venture, Mario Soares , the main political rival of Francisco Sa Carneiro. The personal files of the SDP leader were used as a pre-election compromising material [8] . This led to the rupture of the former friendly relations between Soares and Abecassish, despite the apologetic explanations.
"The princess who came from the cold" was a stubborn woman, strong and full of life [9] .
The situation was complicated by the fact that the party of Sa Carneiro acted from the standpoint of protecting traditional Catholic values [10] . The divorce and remarriage of a leader with a divorced woman from a Protestant country on this background looked unthinkable.
However, Sa Carneiro, distinguished by an individualistic character and great tenacity, made a firm decision to defend his right to freedom of personal life [11] . This was considered as a fundamental moment of a break with the everyday traditions of Salazarism [3] . He was actively supported by Natalia Korreya, who called the link between Francisco and Sleep "the most significant revolutionary act since April 25" [7] .
Sa Carneiro refused to attend official receptions if Abacassish was not invited there (as a result, Manuel Eanesh, the wife of Portuguese President Ramal Eanesh, who did not recognize the status of Abecassish [3], refused to attend the meeting with US President Jimmy Carter . Sa Carneiro constantly appeared with Sleep at public and mass events, showed his feelings for her. He threatened to resign from the post of chairman of the Social Democratic Party, if the party does not accept a new partner in his life [9] . The threat had its effect: the inner-party criticism ceased.
For her part, Snu Abekassish showed sincere love for Portugal and concern for the interests of the party of her actual spouse (although, according to reviews of people who knew her, she could not get used to the lack of discipline and disorganization of Portuguese society [7] ). She behaved modestly and kindly. According to a prominent figure of the Social Democratic Party, Marcela Rebelo de Sousa (since 2016 - the President of Portugal), Snou Abacasseesh helped Sa Carneiro by “opening a broad view of the world” - which was previously not typical of a Portuguese nationalist . Gradually, Snu Abekassish conquered more and more sympathies in the country, if not among the political elite, then among the simple Portuguese [6] .
In December 1979, the center-right coalition Democratic Alliance , led by Sa Carneiro, won a convincing victory in parliamentary elections . Francisco Sa Carneiro became Prime Minister of Portugal . Elections in October 1980 brought the SDP and the Democratic Alliance even greater success. It became obvious that the majority of the society did not consider the decision of Sa Carneiro to be an inexcusable fault.
In early December 1980, Isabel Sa Carneiro agreed to a divorce. However, Francisco and Sleep did not have time to find out about it [7] .
Doom
On December 7, 1980 , a presidential election was held in Portugal. The Democratic Alliance has put forward its own candidate, General António Soares Carneiro (namesake Francisco). On the night of December 4, 1980, Francisco Sa Carneiro, Snou Abacassis, Defense Minister Adeline Amaru da Costa , his wife Maria da Silva Pires, and the Prime Minister’s Office, Antonio Patricio Gouvei, flew from Lisbon to Porto to rally in support of Soares Carneiro. Subsequently, it became known that Snoh insisted on flying with Francisco because she had a premonition of trouble [3] . However, she was waiting for her in Porto, while the tragedy happened in flight [7] .
A few seconds after taking off from Portela Airport, the Cessna 421 plane crashed into the territory of Kamarate . All on board — five passengers and two pilots — died [10] . An official investigation identified the crash as an accident due to a shortage of fuel. There are numerous versions of the attack (some of them are convincing in their own way), but they have no evidence to support the version.
The funeral service for Snoup Abacassish and Francisco Sa Carneiro was carried out separately, but they were buried together in the Lisbon cemetery of Alto de São João. Above the grave was the mother of Sleep. According to her, “everything that Sleep could give Francisco, and through him - Portugal” [7] .
Memory
The love story, Snu Abekassish and Francisco Sa Carneiro, are classified as "romantic and intriguing episodes of the 20th century." They are often compared with the legendary example of King Pedro I and the maid of honor Ines de Castro [6] .
In 2003, the book Snu [12] was published in Portugal - a biography of Snu Abacassish [ 13] , written by her mother with a foreword to Marcel Rebel de Soza [14] .
In 2015, the 50th anniversary of the Dom Quixote publishing house was widely celebrated. Snu Abekassish was called the “Danish woman who discovered Portugal” [4] .
