Biography

The date of birth of Nikolai Gusovsky is reliably unknown, but it is assumed that he was born between 1470-1475 and 1485. The conditional date of the 500th anniversary of Gusovsky was celebrated in 1980.

Polish researchers [1] (some Belarusian researchers also share their opinion [2] ) believe that the birthplace of Nikolai Gusovsky is the village of Gusow located 13 km from the Polish city of Lancut ( Polish. Husów , now Lancut County , Subcarpathian Voivodeship , Poland ), it was a German colony, whose name was spelled it. Huschau , German Hussav or him. Hussau , the existence of this colony has been known since at least 1450 [3] . Other Belarusian researchers suggest that the birthplace of Nikolai Gusovsky is a certain Belarusian village of Usa (or Usovo), the exact location of which is not possible to establish due to the absence of any historical sources.

He came from a hunter's family.

Gusovsky mastered the diploma in a cathedral or parish school. He was a Catholic priest; he was ordained around 1518. For some time he served as a public notary of the apostolic office for the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Later, he was the court of the bishop of Plock, Erasmus Ziolek, whom he accompanied in 1521 at his embassy in Rome to Pope Leo X. Gusovsky witnessed a plague on the Apennine Peninsula . Impressed by these tragic events, Gusovsky created a poetic prayer “To St. Sebastian”. On December 1, 1521, Pope Leo X died. After a one-year stay in Rome and the death of Bishop Tsiolek, who fell victim to the epidemic on September 9, 1522, Gusovsky returned to Poland and settled in Krakow .

Nikolai Radziwill , the Vilnius governor, intended to send a stuffed bison to Leo X. In this regard, Nikolai Gusovsky had to write some kind of “supplement” to this unusual gift - the poem “ Carmen de statura feritate ac venatione Bisontis ” (Song about the look, wild bison and hunting for him), which is now better known as the " Song of the Bison ." But since Leo X died, the gift was not delivered to him, but the poem was nevertheless written by Nikolai Gusovsky, but already in Krakow, and dedicated to Queen Bon , who gave the money to print this work.

The date of death and the burial place of Nikolai Gusovsky is unknown, but it is assumed that he died after 1533.
