Biography

Representative of the Legnica line of the Silesian Piast . The only son of Johann I (1425-1453), Prince Khoynuvsky (1441-1453), Lyubinsky (1441-1446) and Brzegsky (1443-1450), and Jadwigi Legnitzky (c. 1433-1471).

After the death of his uncle Henry X (in 1452 ) and his father (in 1453 ), Frederick I became the only male representative of the Legnica - Brzeg line of the Silesian Piast dynasty. After the death of his father, seven-year-old Frederick inherited Chojnów and Strzelin under the regency of his mother, widowed princess Jadwiga. In 1454, after the death of his paternal grandmother, Margarita Opole , Friedrich took possession of Olawa and Nemcha . In the same 1454, Prince Frederick I received the Legnica principality , formerly part of the Czech kingdom. The regency of the widowed princess Jadwiga ended in 1466 , when Frederick I was officially proclaimed an adult and began to rule independently. During his reign, he focused on strengthening his dynasty and the return of all lands lost by his predecessors.

In 1481, Prince Frederick I of Legnitzky bought Brzeg from the Dukes of Opole , and in 1482 acquired Lubin from Princes Glogowski . In 1488 he annexed the city of Bycin , Volchin and Kluchbork to his possessions.

He died in Legnitz on May 9, 1488 .
