The bobsleigh competition among the two at the 1956 Winter Olympics was held on January 27 and 28 in Cortina d'Ampezzo on the bobsled track . According to the regulations, each crew had four arrival attempts: the winner of the Games was the crew with the lowest total time for the sum of four attempts.
The crews of Italian pilots Lamberto Dalla Costa and Eugenio Monti were considered the favorites from the very beginning, since many strong bobsledders from other countries had already completed their careers by this time, and Italians had just begun to develop new promising technologies for the production of sledges, significantly updated the design and construction of their beans. The twos had no doubts about their victory after the first attempt, as a result, Dalla Costa, who rarely spoke outside the home track in Cortina d'Ampezzo, was only 0.8 seconds ahead of his compatriot. The struggle for third place unfolded between the national teams of Switzerland, the USA and Spain, which debuted here. The fate of the bronze was decided only after the fourth attempt: the award went to the team of the Swiss Max Angst , and the Spanish crew, consisting of two marquises ( Alfonso de Portago and Vicente Sartorius i Cabeza de Vasa) lost to the Swiss in just 0.14 seconds. Just five teams during the races refused to further participate in the competition.
