Story
Ronald Malcolm works at the American Literary and Historical Society in Washington, DC. In fact, he is an employee of the CIA , and under the guise of a harmless public organization, a secret section 9 of department 17 is hiding, analyzing the plots of detective and espionage novels. One day, a colleague of Malcolm, Rich Heidegger, tells him about the strange disappearance of two boxes of books purchased for their section. Without emphasizing the small mistake, from his point of view, Malcolm calmly continues his work. The next day, he goes to a restaurant next door to buy sandwiches for lunch. Upon returning, Malcolm discovers that in his absence a group of unknowns killed all his colleagues. Realizing that he was in serious danger, he calls the CIA headquarters by telephone for emergency situations.
When calling, Malcolm calls his code name "Condor" and reports on a raid on the office. He is informed of the need to meet with an agent named Weatherby, who must ensure his protection. In fact, Weatherby is part of the group guilty of the death of employees of the 9th section. Now he is trying to kill Malcolm, who is fleeing, saving his life. A harmless analyst, not knowing whom he can trust, is forced to use all his skills and knowledge to escape both the drug traffickers and the CIA leadership.
In search of asylum, Malcolm kidnaps Wendy Ross, the assistant lawyer , accidentally overhearing how she talks about her plans to spend the holidays in her apartment, which allows him to hope that no one will notice her absence. He quickly gains the confidence of the girl, and she helps him in his efforts to stay alive and learn more about the forces after him. Yet the enemies find Malcolm's refuge, but he again manages to escape death. At the same time, Ross was seriously injured, Malcolm considers her dead and only later finds out that she survived.
In the end, Malcolm falls into the hands of the killers, but suddenly Vincent Dale Maronik comes to his aid, according to one of the characters of the novel, "the best operational agent and" free artist "of our time." In various periods, he worked for the special services of England , Italy , South Africa , Congo, Canada and the CIA, and later began to work with the Weatherby group. Being dissatisfied with the actions of his accomplices and fearing them, Maronik decides to get out of business and leave for the Middle East . To do this, he rescues Malcolm and tells him the truth about Weatherby's group. It turns out that for five years now, a group of rogue policemen has been operating within the CIA, smuggling drugs from Laos and using secret channels of American counterintelligence for this. It is this group that is responsible for the murders of the employees of the 9th section, committed by them after Heidegger accidentally discovered traces of their fraud. At the head of the criminals is Robert T. Atwood, a former U.S. Navy officer.
Having neutralized Atwood and handed it over to the authorities, Malcolm sends a letter to the CIA in the mail, in which he stated everything he knew, and then goes to the National Airport, where he kills Maronik, avenging him for the murdered, as he thought, Wendy Ross. Eliminating the killer, Malcolm contacted the CIA, asking him to pick him up from the airport.
