Format

In each of the disciplines, one person from the team spoke. The winning team was determined by the highest score. Points were awarded as followsː for victory in the discipline - 9 points, 2nd place - 8 points, 3rd place - 7 points, 4th - 6 points, 5th - 5 points, 6th - 4 points, 7 e - 3 points, 8th - 2 points, 9th - 1 point. Disqualified, retired, and also not having scored attempts, participants did not receive a single point.

Team Championship

The African men's team won the World Cup for the fourth time in a row. The women's team of Russia for the first time became the owner of the main trophy of competitions, in a bitter struggle ahead of the European team by 3 points [1] .

In 2003, British sprinter Dwayne Chambers was convicted of doping. After a protracted trial for several years, the IAAF decided to disqualify the athlete for 2 years and annul his results from January 1, 2002 to August 1, 2003. During this period, his results at the European Cup - 2002 , a victory at 100 meters and a relay race of 4 × 100 meters fell, because of which the British team lost points in the team standings and dropped from first place to fourth. In this situation, the British did not have the right to participate in the World Cup, since only two of the best European Cup teams received tickets to the tournament. In this regard, the IAAF canceled the result of the men's team of Great Britain at the World Cup (8th place, 87 points), but upheld the individual results of its athletes (with the exception of Chambers fifth in the 100m race) [2] [3] .

a In August 2008, the US Anti-Doping Agency disqualified sprinter Antonio Pettigrew and canceled all the results that he showed from 1997 to 2003. The basis was the testimony of the athlete himself, who, during the trial of his former coach Trevor Graham, admitted that during this period he had taken banned erythropoietin to improve athletic performance. Thus, the performance of the US national team ( James Carter , Leonard Bird , Godfrey Herring , Antonio Pettigrew ) at the 2002 World Cup relay race of 4x400 meters fell into disqualification, second place with a score of 2.59.21 [4] .

b On November 23, 2007, the IAAF Council decided to annul the results of the American short-distance runner Marion Jones , who had previously been disqualified for doping ( anabolic steroids ). It has been proven that the athlete since 1999 was a participant in the doping schemes of the California BALCO laboratory. All appearances of Jones from September 1, 2000 were canceled, including at the 2002 World Cup: first place in the 100-meter run (10.90), as well as second place in the US team ( Christy Gaines , Marion Jones , Inger Miller , Gale Divers ) in the relay 4 × 100 meters with a score of 42.05 [5] [6] .
c In December 2004, the US Anti-Doping Agency disqualified Michelle Collins for 8 years as a short-distance runner. The athlete was one of the first persons involved in the BALCO doping laboratory case: her doping tests showed a positive result for erythropoietin , testosterone and tetrahydrogestrinone. All performances of Collins from February 1, 2002 were canceled, including the second place for the US team ( Michelle Collins , Crystal Cox , Susianne Reed , Monica Hennagan ) at the 2002 World Cup in the 4x400 meters relay with a score of 3.24.67 [7] .
