Biography
Born in Fleetwood , Lancashire , England [1] . He spent his entire career as a football player in the Sidmouth club, and finished playing football at age 22 due to an injury. He later worked as a trainer in Western Australia [2] .
In 1976, he got a head coach at the New Zealand club Manureva [1] , with whom he won the Chatham Cup in 1978 and brought him to New Zealand’s top division [2] . In 1979, he was appointed head coach of the New Zealand national team . Having overcome Australia Rudi Gutendorf , Indonesia , Fiji and Taiwan in qualifying for the 1982 World Cup, they defeated the Chinese national team in the first qualifying round and defeating the final round for the first time. New Zealand set many records in this qualifying tournament. They played 15 qualifying matches, breaking 55,000 miles for that. Their score 13-0 in the match against Fiji was at that time a world championship record, as well as 6 goals scored in this match by Steve Sumner . Also their goalkeeper Richard Wilson set a world championship record, standing 921 minutes “dry”. The next opportunity to speak at the World Cup occurred only after 28 years. New Zealand lost in all three matches in the Championship, against Scotland (5-2), the Soviet Union (3-0) and Brazil (4-0) [3] .
Later he headed the East Coast Base and Mount Wellington clubs, returned to Western Australia in the 90s, and later went to Oman , where he was involved in the development of children's football and led the Omani national team until the age of 17 , with which he participated in the 1995 World Cup youth teams [4] .
In 2005, he returned to New Zealand, where he led the New Zealand Knights to participate in the first season of the A-League . Bad club results and a suspicion of cancer led to the end of an active career coach after the end of the season.
In 2013, he was awarded the Order of Merit for services to New Zealand [5] .
