Life Story
Descended from the imperial family of Zhao, who ruled China under the name of the Song dynasty. Born in Haiyang (modern province of Zhejiang ). In 1226 he passed the imperial exam and received the highest degree of jinshi. First served in the administration of Huzhou. Later he was appointed judge of the Yanzhou region, which covered the present territories of the Jiande, Chunan and Tonglu regions of Zhejiang province. In this post, he remained until the end of life. He died in 1295.
Creativity
He was a master at portraying daffodils, plums, orchids, bamboo and rocks, but the daffodils best served him. He is counted among the group of the so-called “Three friends of winter” - artists and poets, who sang or depicted the artistic composition of plums, bamboo and pines in winter . All pictures are painted with monochrome technique using black paint. One of the most famous works of Zhao Menjian is Narcissus; The painting is kept in the Tientsin Museum.
