According to the Constitution adopted in 2017, this election was the last direct presidential election. In the subsequent elections, 300 members of the Electoral College will vote.
The ruling party “ Georgian Dream ” has not announced its candidate for the upcoming elections. This position is shared by party chairman Bidzina Ivanishvili , who, especially before the election, returned to politics due to the political crisis in the country. Ivanishvili believes that for the democratic development of the country it would be better if the “Georgian Dream”, which already has the majority of parliamentary seats, abandons the struggle for the presidency in favor of the opposition forces.
Before the election, 10 opposition parties decided to unite and nominate a single candidate. On July 15, 2018, the opposition formed the Strength in Unity coalition. The most influential of the united parties in Georgia is the Unified National Movement . On July 19, Grigol Vashadze was declared a candidate for the alliance.
The current Georgian president, Georgi Margvelashvili, said that he was not going to run for the 2nd term.
