Mesokephaly

Finn ( Western Finland ) with a ratio of width to head length of 78.0% [1]

Mesocephaly (from other Greek: μ среднийσος “middle, intermediate” and ϰεφαλή “head”; also mesocephaly , medium- headedness ) is one of the variants of the head index , expressed in average values of the ratio of the transverse and longitudinal diameters of the human head (for the cranial index , the term “ mesocranes "). It is characterized as a moderately broad and moderately long head. It is determined using cephalometric and craniometric measurements [2] [3] . The ratio of the width to the length of the head with mesokephaly is from 76.0 to 80.9% [4] , according to other sources - from 75.0 to 79.9% [3] . There is a head index for women (77.0–81.9%) and men (76.0–80.9%) [5] .

Mesokephaly occupies an intermediate position between the extreme values of the longitudinally transverse index (head index) - brachycephaly (with a head shape approaching roundish) and dolichokephaly (with a long and narrow head shape) [2] . In the parameters of the cranial index, a dolichomesocranium is sometimes also distinguished with values between the dolichocranium and the mesocranium [6] , and mesobrachranium, which reflects the average value between the brachycrania and mesocranium [7] .

Mesokephaly, as well as other values of the cephalic index, is important in racial studies [8] . Mesokephaly is included, in particular, in the characterization of the Far Eastern and South Asian Mongoloid races [9] , as well as in the characterization of the White-Baltic Baltic Caucasoid race [10] .
