History
The settlement was based on the merger of two railways. The Southern Pacific was built from 1869 off the west coast, while the Texas and Pacific Railway was laid west from central Texas since 1872. By November 25, 1881, the constructed sections of railways ended 15 kilometers from each other. On December 15, an agreement was reached that railways would be merged 10 kilometers southeast of Mount Sierra Blanca. The historic venue quickly became an important commercial center, allowing local pastoralists and miners to ship their products. In 1882, the post office was opened, but it was closed in the same year and reopened only after 3 years. By 1892, two hotels and a shop were operating [4] .
In 1921, the Texas legislature passed a law according to which half of the city, as well as the rest of Hadspet County and El Paso County, switched to mountain time , while the second half of the city lived according to Central American time . In the mid-1950s, there was a situation where the post office and the railway worked according to Central American time, and the schools and the district court worked on the mountain. Also, along the mountain time, to stay open longer, the bars of the city worked. In the early 1990s, the Oklahoma revenue management company acquired more than 90,000 acres of land near Sierra Blanca. Since 1992, an average of 225 tons of treated wastewater has been discharged from New York . In 1992, state authorities selected a site near Sierra Blanca for the disposal of low-level radioactive waste. The decision caused discontent among local residents, who created initiative groups to combat burial projects in the mid-1990s [4] .
