Sergei Mikhailovich Daniel (November 20, 1949, Leningrad ) is a Soviet and Russian art critic, Doctor of Art History, professor at the Faculty of Art History of the European University in St. Petersburg and the St. Petersburg State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I. E. Repin . Member of the Union of Artists of Russia ; Member of the Association of Art Critics .

Biography
He graduated from the city children's art school in Leningrad (1961-1965), the Leningrad Art College named after V. A. Serov (1965-1969, qualification: graphic designer), I.E. Repin Institute (Department of Theory and History of Arts, 1971-1977). In 1969-1977, he studied the art of old masters in the Hermitage under the leadership of G. Ya. Dlugach . Member of the informal creative association Hermitage (1969-1997). In 1969-1990 he taught at the children's art school, while also engaged in painting and the theory of art, took part in exhibitions. In the 1970s, he became close to representatives of the Moscow-Tartu School . In 1979 he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of art on the topic: “Compositional principles of Poussin ” [1] , in 1988 - a doctoral dissertation: “A picture of the classical era. The problem of composition in Western European painting of the 17th century ” [2] . Since 1992 - a leading employee of the Russian Institute of Art History . He taught special courses at universities in St. Petersburg , Moscow , Tartu , Kaunas , as well as in Italy and America. Since 1995 - professor at the Russian Academy of Arts .
Research interests: Western European and Russian painting; biblical iconography ; theory of art.
