Biography

Born in a merchant family. At the age of seven, she lost her father. A large family was in poverty. From the age of 13, she was engaged in self-education. At the age of 21, she fell in love with a Moravian German printer Franz Readinger. Upon learning that he has a bride, she stopped having an affair with him, but later romanticized his image in her works. Contemporaries described her as a girl of interest to men, but because of the nighttime incontinence she suffered from until she was 40, Carolina rejected the idea of marriage.

As a teacher, she worked in wealthy families in Graz , Trieste and Venice . In 1840 she returned to Karlovac, where she founded the first private school for girls (1840-1853). Since 1853 she lived in Pribic, and since 1866 again in Karlovac.

Dragoila often spoke of the need for the formation of the Croatian people, because she saw this as an important prerequisite for achieving political goals. Since the early 1850s, she tried to distance herself from politics and devote herself exclusively to teaching.

Creativity

In 1839 she met the writer I. Trnsky , who had a great influence on her. Having joined the Illyrians, she published patriotic and love poems in Croatian in the Danica magazine.

Her novel “Two Feasts” on the theme of the 1848 revolution was written in the tradition of romanticism and published in 1864.

The theater was especially fond of D. Yarnevich. Her pen belongs to the drama "Veronica Desinicheva", "Mary, Queen of Hungary", "Duvna" (now lost).

Her works, unlike many contemporaries, whose stories were interwoven with the Turkish past, depicted the pressing problems of Croatian society of that time. During the 1850-1860s, Yarnevich published more than a dozen sentimental adventure stories in periodicals. She is also the author of several short stories for children.

Of great interest is the "Diary" of the writer, which she kept from 1832 to 1874. In addition to autobiographical notes, it contains the author's observations about outstanding contemporaries and political events. Written from the perspective of a woman who consciously chose independence and loneliness, who lives by the labor of her own hands, emphasizes the importance of money and depicts the patriarchal and material oppression of women of her time. At first Dragoila led it in German, and after several years of recordings, she switched to Croatian. The specificity was that Yarnevich planned to make it subsequently known to the public, bequeathing to print it ten years after her death. There were several attempts to process the manuscript, the most famous of which was the editorial board of Stanch Dvorak, as a result of which the book Life of a Woman. Selected Diary Pages ”published in 1958. The diary was fully published only in 2000.

D. Jarniewicz - a pioneer of the climbing movement in Croatia, is considered the first climber of this country. On April 19, 1836, she climbed to the top of Martinsak near Karlovac. And September 13, 1843 became the first woman to climb Mount Okich from the steep south side. At that time, this was a great achievement, since there was no climbing equipment. Dragoyla climbed the rocks barefoot. Its route is currently called the Dragoilina trail [2] . Hiking is organized annually, which repeats the path of the writer [3] .
