Football career

A native of Sunderland , Ernie Taylor began playing football for the Hilton Collieri local coal mine club. He also served in the British Navy in a submarine. In September 1942 he became a player at Newcastle United . He spent 26 matches for Newcastle and scored 7 goals in the military league. On January 5, 1946 he made his debut for Newcastle United in the official Football League match against Barnsley . As a result of the 1947/48 season, Newcastle entered the First Division of the Football League , Ernie had only 8 matches that season. The following season, he made his way to the main team, having played 28 matches and scoring 3 goals. His characteristic is as follows: “ Ernie Taylor hardly weighed 10 stones (63 kg ) and was 5 feet and 4 inches (163 cm ) tall , in fact he was a shorty among the giants on the football field. He wore boots of the 4th size, but he had the talent and the ability to give a cutting pass, which made him one of the most productive handlers in the country ” [2] .

In the 1950/51 season, Ernie scored 8 goals in 40 matches and helped his team take 4th place in the First Division, as well as reach the FA Cup final , in which Newcastle met with Blackpool . In the first half, the teams did not score goals. But in the second half, in the 50th minute, Jackie Milburn opened the scoring after a pass by Jorge Robledo , and five minutes later the same Milburn scored the second goal after an elegant pass from the heel from Ernie Taylor. The match ended in a Newcastle victory 2-0, and Taylor won his first FA Cup . Legendary player Stanley Matthews , who was part of the losing team, called Taylor the "architect of victory" for Newcastle and asked Blackpool head coach Joe Smith to arrange his transfer. Matthews recalled: “ Ernie was a daring, self-confident player, and if he was playing, he could be simply brilliant. Despite his lean physique, he calmly withstood the toughest tackles of the ball and could open the opponent’s most complex and organized defensive orders ” [2] . Taylor spent 117 official matches for Newcastle and scored 21 goals [3] .

Joe Smith followed Matthews advice and in October 1951 Ernie moved to Blackpool for £ 25,000 . A powerful team was assembled at Blackpool, in which players such as Stanley Matthews, Huey Kelly , Stan Mortensen , Harry Johnston and Bill Perry were already playing. Ernie Taylor formed in this team a bunch with Matthews on the right flank of the attack [4] . In 1953, Blackpool reached the FA Cup final (for the third time in five years), in which he met with the Bolton Wanderers . This match went down in history as the “ Matthews Finals ”, “Blackpool” won in it with a score of 4: 3, and Taylor won the second FA Cup in his career [2] .

On November 25, 1953, Ernie Taylor played his first (and only) match for the national team , in which the British lost to the “ golden team ” of Hungary with a score of 6: 3 [5] .

In February 1958, he transferred for £ 8,000 to Manchester United , which needed to be strengthened after losing a large number of players in a Munich plane crash . Jimmy Murphy believed that the experience of 32-year-old Ernie Taylor is extremely necessary for a young team that was left without a number of key players [1] . He made his debut for the club on February 19, 1958 in the fifth round match of the FA Cup against Sheffield Wensday , in which United won 3-0. In total, in the remainder of the 1957/58 season, he spent 19 matches for the team and scored 4 goals. Bloodless United with Taylor as a part managed to reach the final of the FA Cup in 1958 , but lost to Bolton in it with a score 2: 0. Ernie spent 30 matches at United and scored 4 goals [6] , but in December 1958 he was sold to Sunderland for 7,000 pounds [1] .

At Sunderland, Taylor spent another three seasons. Later he played for Altringham and Derry City , after which he moved to New Zealand , where he coached the New Brighton club and played for the East Coast Base.

After completing his football and coaching career, he lived in Liverpool, where he worked at the Vauxhall Automobile Plant [2] .

He died in Birkenhead on April 9, 1985. [2]
