Biography
At baptism he received the name Ignatius Anthony, usually using only the name Ignatius.
As the owner of a vast estate, he knew the plight of the peasants and was a staunch opponent of serfdom. In 1850, he became a co-author of the project on the abolition of serfdom in the territory of Vitebsk province and held it at a meeting of nobles of the province, but the tsarist administration found a legal clue that the project would not become legal. After a long time did not take part in public life.
He served as a caretaker of ssypnyh shops in Drissensky district, was elected in 1859 by Drissinsky district leader of the nobility. Full member of the Vitebsk provincial custody of orphanages, a member of the Vitebsk provincial statistical committee.
After the promulgation of the royal decree on the abolition of serfdom and the beginning of the Great Peasant Reform in 1861, Ignatius Khrapovitsky actively embarked on its implementation, for which he was awarded a silver medal on the Alekseevskaya ribbon and the bronze medal "For the Emancipation of the Peasants".
In 1859 he was elected, and after the cancellation of the Zemstvo elections in the western provinces due to the uprising of 1863-1864. reassigned to the post Drissa district leader of the nobility, occupying it continuously from 1859 to 1880. In 1871 he participated in the congress of farmers in Smolensk. On November 10, 1880, he was appointed by the Russian government to the post of the Vitebsk provincial leader of the nobility, which he held until his death on December 25, 1893. He was one of the leaders of the Vitebsk Agricultural Society, and in 1880-1893. was its chairman.
He wrote in most cases in Polish, although he thoroughly mastered the Belarusian and Old Belarusian. In the 1840s from the 1st issue he collaborated with the Rubon almanac. The author of the work “A look at the poetry of the Belarusian people” with the application of observations on the peculiarities of the Belarusian language on the material of the Vitebsk Region (Rubon, 1845, Vol. 5) - the first historical and comparative characteristic of the Belarusian folklore heritage. Author of numerous poems, including romantic ones, translations of Belarusian folk songs into Polish, some historical documents from the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. I was preparing to publish the work “The Complete Belarusian Songbook”, developed a classification for it, accumulated texts.
He was buried in the village cemetery in Kokhanovichi (present-day Verkhnedvinsk district, Vitebsk region, Belarus ). After 1917, the grave was destroyed, and gravestones were thrown into the ditch. At the beginning of the 21st century, the tombstones of Ignatius Khrapovitsky and his spouses were found by local residents during the reconstruction of the road, and symbolic graves of Khrapovitsky and his wife were restored at the local cemetery (their exact location could not be established).
In 2017, in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of I. Ye. Khrapovitsky, an international scientific conference was held in Verkhnedvinsk and Kokhanovichy.
