Biography
Born August 13, 1984 in Voronezh . Father Nikolai Serafimovich Filipov, a military pilot , was a navigator on the Su-25 [5] . Mother Elena Viktorovna is a nurse . The younger sister is Margarita [5] [6] .
In 2001 he graduated from secondary school No. 85 of Voronezh [1] [6] [7] . He studied well, was fond of sports, dreamed of becoming a pilot [5] [6] . He studied at the Armavir Center of the Krasnodar Higher Military Aviation School named after Hero of the Soviet Union A.K. Serov [5] [6] [7] . In the 4th year, he transferred to a branch in Borisoglebsk and continued his studies at the Borisoglebsk Training Aviation Training Center named after V. P. Chkalov [5] [8] .
Since 2006, he served in the 187th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment (military unit No. 13984) in the village of Chernigovka, Primorsky Territory [1] [9] . He passed all positions from senior pilot to deputy squadron commander of the Eastern Military District assault regiment [10] [11] , from where he was seconded to the location of the Russian Air Force air forces in Syria , where he took part in military operations as a flight commander of the Su-25CM attack aircraft [ 5] . Filipov was an ace pilot of attack aircraft, repeatedly participated in the All-Russian military maneuvers Aviadarts , where in 2013 he took second place among attack aircraft [1] [5] [7] . He was a first-class military pilot, flew a total of 1300 hours and completed about 80 sorties [5] .
Last fight
On February 3, 2018, while flying over the Idlib de-escalation zone to control the ceasefire, the paired Russian Su-25 SM attack aircraft, led by Major Filipov near the city of Serakib, was shot down [12] by a shot from a portable anti-aircraft missile system . Journalists V. N. Baranets and A. I. Kots note that, according to the experts interviewed by them, MANPADS was, presumably, the Stinger system [13] ; according to other sources, it was a Soviet-made MANPADS. A member of the Syrian group "Jaysh Idlib Khur" Mahmoud Haj Ismail with the call sign "Castro" said that he shot down a Russian attack aircraft from the anti-aircraft installation ZU-23-2 [14] . The pilot tried to keep the plane in the air and reported that he was attacked by a rocket, after which he ejected. On the ground, the pilot was surrounded by militants and died in the ensuing battle: while firing from the attackers with a Stechkin pistol , he was seriously injured, and then blew himself up with a grenade with the words “This is for you guys!” [3] [13] [15] . The guided stormtrooper commander supported the commander with fire from the air, carried out several attacks, and worked on vehicles that were approaching the olive grove where Roman was. He destroyed two cars and left the area only when an emergency amount of fuel was left [16] .
The downed Su-25SM aircraft (with flight number 06 and serial number RF-95486) was previously assigned to the Kuban air regiment [17] , and then in 2014 it was redeployed to the Crimea, where it was part of the 37th mixed air regiment 27- of the 4th combined aviation division of the 4th Army Air Force and Air Defense of the Southern Military District , stationed at the Guards air base [18] .
Responsibility for the defeat from MANPADS was claimed by the militants of the terrorist organization Jabhat Fath al-Sham (formerly known as Jebhat al-Nusra ) and the rebel Syrian Free Army (the Jaish al-Nasr group) [19 ] [20] . Three dozen militants were killed in this square by a high-precision retaliatory strike in this square [21] [22] , followed by cleansing of the territory by special forces of the Syrian Ground Forces with the support of the Russian Air Force to evacuate the body of the pilot and aircraft parts to establish the type of MANPADS [20] . For the same purpose, special operations were conducted by Russian and Turkish special services [23] .

On the morning of February 8, a farewell ceremony was held at the Chkalovsky airfield with the participation of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation , Army General Sergei Shoigu and members of the collegium of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation , after which the coffin with the hero’s body was delivered by special transport military transport to Voronezh [24] .

Colonel General Sergei Surovikin, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Aerospace Forces, took part in the mourning events [25] . The funeral service for the pilot was performed by Metropolitan of Voronezh and Liskinsky Sergius in the Church of the Icon of the Mother of God “Recovery of the Dead” [26] .
