Mikheev, Valery Fedorovich

In the depths of Russia, in the village of Seredichi, Bolkhov district, Oryol region, on the day of the great holiday - Annunciation, 04/07/1949, in an intelligent family, school teachers, a boy was born. Who was destined to become an outstanding representative of his time.

Father - Mikheev Fedor Afanasevich, a history teacher, school director, graduated from the Moscow Pedagogical Institute, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War ^[1] , was awarded the Medal "For Courage" ^[2] , the Order of the Patriotic War ^[3] ; mother - Anna Trofimovna Mikheeva, a teacher of foreign languages, studied at the Moscow Institute of Foreign Languages.

Valery went to school with pleasure, graduated eight years in his native village, and then, as one of the best students, he was accepted to the oldest school in the city of Bolkhov ^[4] , which was opened in 1911. The distance from home to school did not scare him, and in 1966 he brilliantly graduated from high school with a silver medal. In the same year, having passed serious entrance tests, he entered the Oryol State Pedagogical Institute (from 1966-1969) at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, but in the 4th year he realized that studying the exact sciences did not give him that inner strength that could to lead him further in life, and he decides to enter the Faculty of Art and Graphics (1969), which he graduates in 1973, the education received determined his future path in life.

The personality of Valery Mikheev, as an artist, was formed in the midst of the national spirit - in the depths of Russia, in the vast Oryol region, which determined his worldview, in which the covenants of folk art culture and canons of Orthodox imagery organically exist. Valery Fedorovich in his works uses artistic aspects from antiquity to modern days: antiquity and folklore, archaic and pagan forms that combine in the most incredible way. Mikheev's works stand out in any exhibition space with an organic combination of visual challenge and imaginative authenticity.

For many years, Valery Mikheev has been actively involved in the development of the cultural and social life of the Oryol region and Russia. He created a huge number of monumental and sculptural works on various genre themes. Their diversity speaks of the artist’s interest and appeal to various topics (the History of Russia, the Great Patriotic War, the history of Christianity, mythology, man and society, etc.).

Most of the monumental works conceived and executed by the artist adorn the streets and squares of the cities of the Oryol region and reflect the history of the Oryol region.

The following monuments are installed in Orel:

• “Monument to A. S. Pushkin” (Komsomolskaya St.) - recognized as one of the best monuments of our time, it shows the whole depth of the great poet, a fleeting smile, this is his subtle irony over the world, a thoughtful look, his attentive attitude to the word;
• “Monument to the victims of radiation disasters” (Oktyabrskaya St.) - this monument is the most unusual monument of modern sculptural thought, it is unconnected in it. In most of the monuments, the victims of radiation disasters are portrayed as a man’s victory over the “atom”. But professionals will say that a person cannot and cannot defeat an “atom”, he can only use it. The monument to the victims of the radiation disasters of the city of Orel speaks of this. An atom is first of all a formidable force hidden inside, and that is why the atom in the sculptural composition is presented in the form of a huge, beautiful in size and power, stone - a boulder, a stone raised high above the ground, by its nature, has the same destructive force that and atom;
• “A memorial to the victims of Nazism executed in the Medvedevsky forest” (Moskovskoye Shosse) - many who leave, from Orel to Moscow, see this monument, and recall the terrible events of World War II;
• Plaques: “Pushkin A. S. at General Ermolov A. P.” (to the building of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Computer Center, Saltykov-Shchedrin St.), “commandant of the Eagle to Major General Panchuk” (per. Solyanoy), “architect Ivanov I. A. Valery Mikheev is considered one of the best contemporary sculptors in Russia. Which, when creating his unique works, in most cases uses a very difficult material - wood. His works are unique and inimitable in their image and performance.

The childhood and adolescence spent in the village determined his worldview, in which the covenants of folk art culture and the canons of Orthodox imagery organically coexist. Youth became a period of improving the natural gift through gaining professional skills, and maturity became a time of gaining confidence based on fidelity to one's calling.

An individual manner combining creative daring with a commitment to nature is developed from the first serious works related to the search for one’s imagery, and as experience is gained, it is formed into an author’s style. Mikheev's works are recognized in any expositional space by an organic combination of visual challenge and figurative authenticity. Such is his Pushkin - boldly correlated with the poet’s ironic self-portrait and at the same time with the harmonious image of a national genius that has become well-established in public consciousness. Such is his “Soldier,” walking with tired determination through the liberated city (exposition of the Military History Museum). Thematic works carried out as part of a social order optimally combine pathos and naturalness (an example is a stele dedicated to Father Sergius (Bulgakov)). Even in the tough genre of the memorial sign, Mikheev finds and assimilates the unused possibilities of free expression.

The main fund of his works are sculptural compositions on a free theme.

Valery Mikheev in each plan sets himself new and new tasks. Artistic tension arising from the collision of a realistic method with an innovative approach charges each new thing with internal energy, which is born from the resolution of hidden contradictions. Such are his portraits - certainly recognizable, but focused on the eccentricity of the internal image; so the portrait of the poet Vladimir Ermakov (pictured - Trio) balances between the concentration of the character and the strangeness of his craft.

A special theme of the sculptor is the understanding of the beauty of the human body as liberation from beauty. His naked nature is striking in a unique combination of erotic and ironic, and never repeating itself. Even at the most eventful exhibition, Valery Mikheev’s works in this genre attract spectators and connoisseurs with a bold confidence in their right to be as they are created by the trained imagination of the author. It is indisputable that all deformations of the prototype are not directed towards criticism of corporeality, but toward the affirmation of humanity. Tenderness and pity for a woman goes through the red line through all his works (sculpture, graphics) in this genre.
