History
As in the previous one , in this championship a fierce struggle broke out for gold awards, which, this time, were fought between Kiev Dynamo and Donetsk Shakhtar. The total gap between the second and third places (which was taken by another Donetsk club, Metallurg) was 23 points.
The fight for first place lasted until the last match, but the key was the victory of Shakhtar, who in the winter season was headed by Italian specialist Nevio Scala , over Dynamo for 2 rounds before the end of the championship, June 3, 2002. Dynamo, shocked by the sudden death of its legendary mentor, Valery Lobanovsky , on May 13, 2002, ultimately lost to the Pitmen only 1 point.
The Football Federation of Ukraine decided to expand the elite division to 16 teams, so only Uzhgorod Zakarpattya directly left the major league. Lutsk SK Volyn-1 , Odessa Chernomorets and Kiev Obolon rose from the first league to replace him. The fate of another place in the major league was decided in a butt match
