Unlike his father, who did a lot of charity work, his son was a charmer and lover of horses. He spent a lot of time at the hippodrome, made major bets, and won the cards at Ryabushinsky in the same place nearby the Black Swan Villa in Petrovsky Park overnight.
For his own race horses, Leon Mantashev wanted to build an impressive building of stables. To work on the project, he invited an Armenian architect from Melitopol, Arshak Izmirov , and he attracted young architects, future idols of constructivism of the Vesnin brothers, to help.
The construction of the stables was completed shortly before the revolution.
Together they built a small but extremely massive building, in a style completely unusual for Moscow, with a huge through arch in the middle, massive columns and, directly above the arch, a tower of belvedere that crowned the spire (or flagpole). In architectural terms, the building was a reference to the Petrovsky Baroque , in particular, to the works of Domenico Trezzini , such as the Peter Gate of the Peter and Paul Fortress ( St. Petersburg ). The facade of the building, as well as the facade of the villa "Black Swan", is decorated with Mantashev's monogram - "LM".
On the sides of the building were paired extensions, behind - a service yard, where the stables proper were located.
Current State
Currently, the main building of the complex is best preserved; there is no passage to the archway for visitors. Twenty years ago, it was transferred to the balance of the Theater of Classical Ballet N. Kasatkina and V. Vasilev , the side extensions were demolished, and an ugly iron frame was added to the back in the courtyard. An illegal project developed at the Institute "Mosproekt-4". Financing of the project began in 1997, but soon ceased. [3] The territory surrendered to auto service enterprises. The street corpus is occupied by a children's ballet school. In 2006, the Government of Moscow decided by court to terminate the contract with the Theater for the non-development of the site. In response, the Theater (an institution of federal subordination) questioned the identity of the monument to the city. Since then, nothing has changed on the spot. The subject of protection of the monument includes the "ratio of built-up and undeveloped spaces", which allows you to disassemble the frame and recreate the lost buildings. [3]
Buildings 1, 3, 8 are listed in the Red Book of Arhnadzor (electronic catalog of the objects of immovable cultural heritage of Moscow under threat), the nomination is reconstruction. [3]
The building is located in the Moscow district of Begovoy , a stone’s throw from Leningradsky Avenue . You can get to it from the metro stations Belorusskaya or Dinamo , then by public transport along the avenue, or 15-20 minutes on foot.
